The White House sharply rebuked conspiracy theories surrounding the attempted shooting near the Washington Hilton hotel during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, with Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre denouncing the claims as “crazy nonsense” during Tuesday’s press briefing.

The incident, which occurred Saturday evening as attendees gathered for the annual gala, resulted in one suspect being taken into custody after Secret Service agents spotted an individual with a rifle near the venue perimeter. President Biden and other high-profile government officials were inside the building at the time.

“What we saw this weekend was another example of the brave men and women of the Secret Service doing their job to keep the President and others safe,” Jean-Pierre told reporters. “The conspiracies that have emerged are not just false but dangerous and irresponsible.”

The comments came in response to a wave of unfounded speculation that has spread across social media platforms and some right-wing media outlets suggesting the incident was staged. Several conservative commentators and some elected officials have questioned the timing and circumstances of the security threat.

Law enforcement officials identified the suspect as 25-year-old Ricky Shiffer, who was apprehended without incident approximately 200 yards from the hotel’s security perimeter. According to investigators, Shiffer was carrying a semi-automatic rifle and had two fully loaded magazines in his possession.

The Secret Service confirmed that at no point did the suspect breach the outer security zone, and President Biden was never in immediate danger. Officials credit the layered security approach and the vigilance of agents who spotted suspicious behavior during their routine surveillance.

“The Secret Service’s security protocols worked exactly as designed,” said Anthony Guglielmi, Chief of Communications for the U.S. Secret Service. “Our agents identified a potential threat and neutralized it before it could develop further. This is precisely why we establish multiple security perimeters at events involving the President.”

The annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner traditionally brings together journalists, celebrities, and political figures, including the President. This year’s event, hosted by comedian Roy Wood Jr., proceeded without interruption despite the security incident occurring just blocks away.

Security experts note that the dinner represents a significant security challenge, as it involves the President appearing in a predictable location with hundreds of attendees who must be screened. Former Secret Service agent Robert McDonald explained that these high-profile gatherings require months of advance planning and coordination among multiple law enforcement agencies.

“The Secret Service doesn’t just secure the venue,” McDonald said. “They establish overlapping zones of protection that extend well beyond the building itself, which is exactly why they were able to intercept this individual before he could pose a direct threat.”

The incident comes amid heightened concerns about political violence and threats against public officials. The Department of Homeland Security has repeatedly warned about the elevated threat environment in the United States, with particular concerns about politically motivated violence.

Congressional leaders from both parties condemned the conspiracy theories, with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer calling them “reckless and deeply irresponsible.” House Speaker Mike Johnson urged colleagues to “respect the work of law enforcement and avoid speculation that undermines public trust in our institutions.”

Security measures for the President and other senior officials have been under increased scrutiny following several concerning incidents in recent years, including an assassination attempt against former President Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania last summer.

The FBI is leading the investigation into Saturday’s incident, working alongside the Secret Service and local law enforcement. Officials expect to file federal charges against the suspect, who remains in custody.

“The facts in this case are clear,” Jean-Pierre emphasized. “There was a real security threat that was professionally handled by law enforcement. Suggesting otherwise doesn’t just fly in the face of reality – it disrespects the men and women who put their lives on the line every day to protect our leaders.”
