West Virginia National Guard Member Shows Improvement After Washington Shooting
Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, the West Virginia National Guard member who survived a shooting near the White House last week, is showing signs of recovery according to state officials. West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey reported Friday that Wolfe’s head wound is gradually improving, and he’s beginning to “look more like himself,” quoting statements from Wolfe’s parents.
The 24-year-old Martinsburg native was seriously injured on November 26 when he and fellow Guard member Spc. Sarah Beckstrom were ambushed while patrolling a subway station just three blocks from the White House. Beckstrom succumbed to her injuries the following day.
Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national who was also wounded during the confrontation, has been charged with murder in connection with the attack. Lakanwal has entered a plea of not guilty.
According to the governor’s statement, Wolfe’s family anticipates he will remain in acute care for at least another two to three weeks. Morrisey has called on West Virginians and Americans nationwide to continue offering prayers for Wolfe’s recovery.
The community has rallied around the wounded serviceman, with a vigil planned Friday night at his alma mater, Musselman High School in Berkeley County. Principal Alicia Riggleman described Wolfe as an engaged and high-achieving student “who embodied the Applemen spirit, contributing positively to our school community both academically and athletically.”
Wolfe, who joined the National Guard in 2019 after graduating high school, serves with the Force Support Squadron, 167th Airlift Wing of the West Virginia Air National Guard. In civilian life, he has worked as a lineman with Frontier Communications since early 2023, according to company statements.
The shooting has drawn national attention as Wolfe and Beckstrom were among more than 2,000 troops deployed to Washington, D.C., as part of President Donald Trump’s initiative to address crime in the capital. This mission involved National Guard personnel taking on supplementary roles supporting local law enforcement operations.
Martinsburg, Wolfe’s hometown, lies approximately 75 miles northwest of Washington, D.C., in Berkeley County. The rural community has been deeply affected by the incident, with local officials and residents expressing shock and concern following the attack.
The ambush has raised questions about the safety protocols for National Guard members operating in urban environments and the specific threats facing military personnel assigned to domestic missions. While Guard members frequently support civil authorities during natural disasters and other emergencies, their deployment in law enforcement support roles presents unique security challenges.
Federal authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including Lakanwal’s motives and background. Details regarding the Afghan national’s immigration status and history in the United States have become subjects of intense scrutiny.
As Wolfe begins what is expected to be a lengthy recovery process, his case highlights the risks faced by National Guard personnel even when serving on domestic soil. Military officials have emphasized that despite these dangers, Guard members remain committed to their mission of protecting American communities.
The governor’s office has indicated they will continue providing updates on Wolfe’s condition as his recovery progresses, while respecting the family’s privacy during this difficult time.
