West Virginia National Guard Soldier’s Condition Improves After Fatal DC Shooting

Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe’s condition has been upgraded from critical to serious following the shooting that killed fellow West Virginia National Guard member Spc. Sarah Beckstrom in Washington, D.C., state officials announced Monday.

West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey and Maj. Gen. James Seward, adjutant general of the West Virginia National Guard, provided the update during a press conference in Charleston, offering a glimpse of hope amid the tragedy that has shaken the state’s military community.

“Andrew was asked if he could hear the nurse who asked the question to give a ‘thumbs up’ and he did respond,” Governor Morrisey told reporters, describing it as “positive news” from friends and family at the hospital. He added that Wolfe’s mother, Melody, has been “such a positive force,” and that she and her husband Jason’s primary request is for continued prayers.

The attack occurred last Wednesday near the Farragut West Metro station, not far from the White House. Both soldiers were on patrol duty when they were allegedly shot by Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan evacuee from Bellingham, Washington. Beckstrom died from her injuries, while Wolfe was critically wounded.

Morrisey attended weekend vigils in both Webster County for Beckstrom and in Martinsburg for Wolfe, just 80 miles from where the shooting took place. The governor and Seward also spent Thanksgiving with National Guard members at the Armory in Washington, D.C.

The shooting has ignited renewed debate about immigration policies and vetting procedures. Morrisey expressed support for President Donald Trump’s call for enhanced vetting of “undocumented aliens” and closing what he described as loopholes in refugee screening procedures.

“Justice must be done in this case. Justice will be meted out,” the governor stated firmly, while cautioning against speculation about the incident as the investigation continues. “The citizens of West Virginia are rightfully angry about what’s happened right now.”

Maj. Gen. Seward emphasized that the attack has deeply affected the approximately 6,000 Guard members statewide. “When we lose one of our family members, I can tell you that every guardsman I talk to is grieving,” he said.

The deployment of National Guard troops to Washington has been a contentious issue, with legal challenges from D.C. officials who have characterized it as an “involuntary military occupation.” However, Morrisey stressed that all 170 West Virginia National Guard personnel currently serving in the capital are doing so voluntarily.

“Every single one of the people there are volunteering,” Morrisey stated. “They’re volunteering because they believe in the mission – they want to support the state of West Virginia, and they want to support the country.”

The governor added that he has been in contact with President Trump and Attorney General Pam Bondi regarding the National Guard’s operations, but will defer to federal authorities on process decisions. West Virginia has not been asked to deploy additional troops beyond its current rotation commitments.

As the investigation continues into what Morrisey called an “unspeakable evil,” the focus remains on supporting Wolfe’s recovery and honoring Beckstrom’s sacrifice. The incident has highlighted the dangers faced by National Guard members, even when serving on domestic soil, and raised questions about security measures for personnel deployed in metropolitan areas.
