DC Police Officer Dies After Being Struck While Helping Stranded Motorist
A Metropolitan Police officer in Washington, D.C. has died from injuries sustained while assisting a stranded driver last month, the department announced Thursday, marking the first line-of-duty death for the force this year.
Officer Terry Bennett, 32, succumbed to injuries he suffered on December 23 when a passing vehicle struck him as he helped a motorist who had run out of gas. The driver who hit Bennett remained at the scene, and while no charges have been filed, the incident remains under investigation, according to an MPD spokesperson.
“The men and women of the Metropolitan Police Department stand shoulder to shoulder with Officer Bennett’s family and friends as they process this unimaginable loss,” said Interim Police Chief Jeffery Carroll in a statement. “Officer Bennett was a model officer, a born and raised Washingtonian who wanted to make a positive impact on his community.”
Bennett, who joined the department in February 2018, was the son of a former MPD officer. He leaves behind his wife and young son.
The officer’s death occurs during a turbulent period for the district’s police force, which has faced significant challenges in recent months. The department underwent temporary federal oversight last year when President Trump took control for a month as part of what his administration described as a crime-fighting initiative. The department has also faced scrutiny for its cooperation with federal agencies, including immigration enforcement officers. Additionally, the department recently experienced a leadership change with the departure of its previous police chief.
Before joining the police force, Bennett dedicated himself to youth development in the district. He served at his alma mater, Ballou Senior High School, first as an associate dean and later as the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator for the Ballou football team.
Mayor Muriel Bowser paid tribute to Bennett, noting that he lost his life doing “what he was known to do — helping and caring for the people around him.” She emphasized his deep commitment to community service.
“Through his coaching, mentorship, and public service, he impacted the lives of countless students and Washingtonians and he leaves behind a legacy of love and courage,” Bowser said in her statement, offering prayers to Bennett’s family and fellow officers.
Following his death, hundreds of law enforcement personnel from multiple agencies formed a solemn procession to honor the fallen officer. MPD officers were joined by members of the U.S. Park Police, U.S. Capitol Police, and the National Guard, who lined the four-mile route as Bennett’s body was transported from MedStar Washington Hospital Center to the D.C. Medical Examiner’s office. Scores of police and emergency vehicles participated in the procession, demonstrating the profound impact of Bennett’s loss on the law enforcement community.
Bennett’s death represents the 127th line-of-duty fatality in the department’s 164-year history. The incident underscores the everyday dangers faced by police officers, even during routine assistance calls.
Traffic-related incidents remain one of the leading causes of line-of-duty deaths for law enforcement officers nationwide. According to data from the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, being struck by vehicles while outside their patrol cars represents a significant risk for officers, particularly those responding to roadside emergencies.
As the investigation into the circumstances of the accident continues, Bennett’s colleagues and the broader Washington community are left to mourn an officer described by leadership as exemplary in his dedication to public service and community support.
