Ohio GOP Governor Candidate’s Former Bodyguard Charged in Major Drug Trafficking Case

Republican gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy expressed shock after learning that a member of his family’s security detail faces serious federal drug trafficking charges, campaign officials confirmed Wednesday.

Justin Salsburey, 43, of Bellefontaine, Ohio, and his wife Ruthann Rankin were charged late last month with conspiracy and possession with intent to distribute large quantities of narcotics through the U.S. postal system. Federal investigators allege the couple received 261 parcels containing counterfeit OxyContin and other pills at their western Ohio home between August 2023 and September 2024.

“Vivek’s family contracts with a private security firm for protective services and was alarmed to hear this disturbing news,” said campaign spokesperson Connie Luck in a statement. Luck confirmed that ARK Protection Group, the private security firm employed by the Ramaswamy family, immediately removed Salsburey from their detail upon learning of the federal investigation.

The case raises questions about vetting processes for security personnel working with political figures. According to Luck, Salsburey had cleared multiple background checks conducted by the security company, the FBI, and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation prior to his employment with the Ramaswamy family. His most recent background check, performed by Ohio State University’s Wexner Medical Center, was completed in September.

The campaign also noted that Salsburey passed a pre-employment drug test and never failed any random drug screenings during his employment period.

The arrest has had ripple effects beyond the political sphere. Rankin, who worked as a schoolteacher in nearby Urbana, has been removed from her position, according to a statement released by the school district. The district did not provide additional details about her employment status or potential disciplinary actions.

Court records show Salsburey remains in custody at the Franklin County jail in Columbus, while Rankin was detained and later released pending trial. Messages left with Salsburey’s previous attorney were not immediately returned.

The criminal complaints detail an extensive operation involving hundreds of drug shipments over approximately a year. While authorities have not specified the total quantity of drugs allegedly trafficked by the couple, the number of deliveries suggests a significant distribution network. The counterfeit OxyContin mentioned in the complaint is particularly concerning given Ohio’s ongoing struggles with opioid addiction and overdose deaths.

Ohio has been hit particularly hard by the opioid epidemic, with synthetic opioids contributing to thousands of fatal overdoses across the state in recent years. Law enforcement agencies have increasingly focused on intercepting counterfeit prescription medications, which often contain unpredictable amounts of fentanyl and other dangerous substances.

“Vivek and his family take matters of safety seriously and support efforts to hold these individuals accountable for these allegations if they are proven,” Luck added in her statement.

The case highlights the challenges political campaigns face in ensuring the trustworthiness of personnel with close access to candidates and their families. Security breaches involving campaign staff or contractors can pose significant risks to political figures, particularly in the current polarized political environment.

Ramaswamy, a businessman and former presidential candidate who dropped out of the 2024 Republican primary race before endorsing Donald Trump, is now seeking the governor’s office in Ohio. The state’s gubernatorial election will be held in 2026, when current Republican Governor Mike DeWine reaches his term limit.

Federal authorities have not indicated whether the investigation extends beyond Salsburey and Rankin or if the case connects to larger drug trafficking networks. The investigation remains ongoing.
