Virginia Governor Youngkin Endorses JD Vance for Potential 2028 Presidential Run

In an exclusive interview on “Fox News Sunday,” Virginia’s outgoing Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin expressed his support for Vice President JD Vance as a potential 2028 presidential candidate, marking the first time Youngkin has publicly weighed in on the next White House race.

“I think Vice President Vance would be a great nominee,” Youngkin told Fox News’ Jacqui Heinrich. “As people speculate on what’s going to happen down the road in 2028, I agree with President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. I think JD Vance would make a great, great presidential nominee.”

The endorsement comes just days before Youngkin completes his single term as governor, as Virginia law prevents governors from running for consecutive terms. Youngkin himself has been viewed by political analysts as a potential contender for the 2028 GOP presidential nomination over the past two years.

While Vance has not publicly declared intentions for a 2028 campaign to succeed Trump, he is widely considered by many conservatives to be the president’s heir apparent to eventually take over the MAGA and America First movements. This perception was strengthened last month when Erika Kirk endorsed Vance at Turning Point USA’s annual summit.

The backing from Turning Point USA, an increasingly influential conservative organization with particular sway among younger voters, could provide Vance with significant momentum should he launch a White House bid. The group has built a powerful grassroots operation that could prove crucial in mobilizing support during primary season.

Youngkin emerged as a Republican star in 2021 when, as a first-time candidate from the party’s business wing, he defeated former Democratic Governor Terry McAuliffe. This victory was particularly significant as Youngkin became the first Republican in twelve years to win a gubernatorial election in Virginia, a state that had been trending toward Democrats for the previous decade.

Despite immediate speculation about his own presidential ambitions following his gubernatorial victory, Youngkin consistently deflected questions about a potential White House run, repeatedly stating that his political focus remained solely on Virginia and that he intended to “finish strong” in his current role.

Looking ahead, Youngkin is expected to campaign for fellow Republicans in this year’s midterm elections, as the GOP aims to maintain its majorities in the House and Senate. The electoral landscape includes contests for governor in 36 states, providing Youngkin with ample opportunity to build his national profile while supporting party candidates.

In the Fox News interview, Youngkin emphasized the importance of focusing on current governance rather than future campaigns, echoing recent comments from Vice President Vance. “I think the most important thing we can do, just like Vice President Vance said recently, is stay focused on the here and now. We have to deliver. We have to deliver for Americans and Virginians,” Youngkin stated.

He added that 2026 would bring “huge elections” to maintain and expand Republican majorities in Congress, reiterating, “I just deeply respect the vice president’s reminder that we have to stay focused on today. And if we stay focused on today and deliver results, then Americans will continue to extend our license to lead.”

As the Republican Party looks toward its post-Trump future, Youngkin’s endorsement represents an early alignment of potential 2028 contenders behind Vance, potentially setting the stage for the vice president’s emergence as the consensus choice to lead the party in the next presidential election cycle.

Interesting that Youngkin is endorsing Vance for 2028 so early. Vance seems to have a lot of conservative support, but it’s still a long way off. I wonder how his policies and platform would differ from Trump’s.

The 2028 race is still a ways off, but Vance is certainly emerging as a leading contender on the Republican side. His ties to Trump could help or hinder him – will he forge his own path or stick closely to the MAGA agenda?

Vance seems to be positioning himself as the heir to the Trump movement, so Youngkin’s support could be key. But he’ll need to demonstrate how his vision differs from the former president’s.

  4. It’s interesting to see Youngkin weighing in on the next presidential race, even though it’s still several years away. His endorsement of Vance suggests he sees him as a rising star in the party.
