Democratic Congresswoman Shares Supportive Messages After Military Orders Video Sparks Controversy
Rep. Chrissy Houlahan of Pennsylvania has released a compilation of supportive voicemails following her appearance in a controversial video that advised military service members they could refuse illegal orders from a president. The Democratic congresswoman and former Air Force captain was one of six veteran lawmakers featured in the viral clip that has drawn sharp criticism from President Donald Trump and War Secretary Pete Hegseth.
The video, which included Democratic lawmakers with military backgrounds, prompted Trump to label the participants as “traitors.” Hegseth went further, requesting that Navy Secretary John Phelan formally review comments made by one senator featured in the video. The War Department also issued a statement reminding service members of their obligation to follow lawful orders.
In response to the backlash, Houlahan shared a mashup of messages from supporters across the country. Callers identified themselves as veterans from various branches and conflicts, including Marine veterans, infantry veterans, a wounded warrior, and descendants of those who served in World Wars I and II, Vietnam, and Korea.
“I am not a constituent,” one caller stated simply. “I am a veteran.”
Many expressed gratitude to Houlahan for “standing up” for military members during what the lawmakers described as a challenging time for public service. Another veteran specifically thanked her for “letting them know it’s OK to question orders that seem wrong or illegal.”
The controversy has escalated beyond social media reactions. Houlahan revealed Tuesday that the FBI had contacted House and Senate sergeants-at-arms requesting interviews with lawmakers who appeared in the video. “President Trump is using the FBI as a tool to intimidate and harass members of Congress,” Houlahan claimed. “No amount of intimidation or harassment will ever stop us from doing our jobs and honoring our Constitution.”
Perhaps most seriously, Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona, a retired Navy combat pilot and astronaut featured prominently in the video, reportedly faces a potential Pentagon investigation. Unlike some others in the video, Kelly holds “retired” status after 20 years of service rather than “former” status, making him potentially subject to recall for disciplinary action that could include loss of rank or other penalties.
The White House has defended Trump against the lawmakers’ insinuations. White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson noted that Democrats like Houlahan were unable to provide examples of unlawful orders given by Trump or the Pentagon when asked. “Because there have been none,” Jackson stated. “It should deeply concern all Americans that elected Democrats are publicly urging the military to openly defy the chain-of-command and the commander in chief’s lawful orders to subvert the will of the American people.”
Hegseth has branded the lawmakers the “Seditious Six,” while his office emphasized that “a service member’s personal philosophy does not justify or excuse the disobedience of an otherwise lawful order.”
The situation has reportedly taken a dangerous turn, with five of the six lawmakers receiving bomb threats to their offices since the video’s release. According to reports, Houlahan, Senator Elissa Slotkin of Michigan, Representatives Jason Crow of Colorado and Chris Deluzio of Pennsylvania received threats to their Capitol Hill offices. Representative Maggie Goodlander of New Hampshire reportedly faced a bomb threat at her local office in Concord.
Houlahan, who represents Chester County and Reading in Pennsylvania, served two years on active duty in the Air Force from 1989-1991 before spending the remainder of her military career in the Reserves until 2004. Her father was a Naval aviator, and she was born at the Naval Air Station Patuxent base in Maryland, highlighting her deep personal connections to military service.
