U.S. Lawmaker Calls for Public Release of Classified Military Strike Footage

Democratic Representative Jim Himes of Connecticut has called for the public release of classified footage showing controversial U.S. military strikes against suspected drug traffickers off Venezuela’s coast, highlighting a growing partisan divide over the operation’s legitimacy.

“I think it’s really important that this video be made public,” Himes said during an interview on “Face the Nation” Sunday. “It’s not lost on anyone, of course, that the interpretation of the video, which six or seven of us had an opportunity to see last week, broke down precisely on party lines.”

The footage in question documents one of approximately 20 strikes conducted by the Department of War targeting alleged drug smuggling vessels in Caribbean waters. What has drawn particular scrutiny is evidence that in one case, the U.S. military launched a second attack specifically aimed at eliminating survivors from an initial strike.

Democrats have quickly condemned the administration’s actions, with some characterizing them as potential war crimes. Republicans have generally defended the operations, describing them as necessary measures against narco-traffickers whom President Donald Trump has designated as terrorists.

Himes emphasized the emotional impact of viewing the footage, suggesting the American public would have a similar reaction. “I think it’s important for Americans to see it because, look, there’s a certain amount of sympathy out there for going after drug runners,” he explained. “But I think it’s really important that people see what it looks like when the full force of the United States military is turned on two guys who are clinging to a piece of wood and about to go under.”

The congressman’s assessment of the situation focused on what he described as the defenseless nature of the targets. “These guys were barely alive, much less engaging in hostilities,” Himes stated, reinforcing his position that public disclosure would provide necessary context for evaluating the military action.

Himes also revealed he had met with Admiral Frank Bradley, who apparently oversaw the operations. While expressing respect for Bradley’s “storied career” and “deep integrity,” the congressman suggested the admiral may have faced institutional pressure to carry out orders he was uncomfortable with.

“An apparently good man like Admiral Bradley is placed in a context where he knows that if he countermands an order that he is perhaps uncomfortable with, it is very likely that he’ll be fired,” Himes said.

The exact chain of command and communication surrounding the authorization of the second strike remains unclear. Both chambers of Congress have initiated inquiries into the strikes, with Senator Roger Wicker, Republican of Mississippi and chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, promising a thorough investigation.

“The investigation will be done by the numbers,” Wicker stated when asked about the probe’s progress, indicating lawmakers would evaluate all relevant evidence.

The controversy reflects broader tensions surrounding the Trump administration’s aggressive approach to combating drug trafficking in the Caribbean. The designation of certain traffickers as terrorists has expanded the military’s legal authority to conduct lethal operations against these targets, raising questions about oversight, proportionality, and compliance with international law.

As congressional investigations proceed, the debate over whether to declassify and release the footage continues to highlight the partisan divisions in Washington regarding national security operations and the appropriate use of military force against non-state actors.
