U.S. Launches Fresh Strikes Against ISIS in Syria Following Deadly Ambush

The United States conducted a new round of retaliatory strikes against Islamic State targets across Syria on Saturday, continuing its response to an ambush that killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter last month.

According to U.S. Central Command, the large-scale operation was carried out around 12:30 p.m. ET in coordination with partner forces. The Jordanian military later confirmed its participation in the strikes, which targeted multiple ISIS positions throughout Syria.

“Our message remains strong: if you harm our warfighters, we will find you and kill you anywhere in the world, no matter how hard you try to evade justice,” Central Command stated in an official release following the operation.

The strikes are part of a broader campaign dubbed “Operation Hawkeye Strike,” named in honor of the Iowa National Guard members killed in the Palmyra ambush. Sgt. Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar, Sgt. William Nathaniel Howard, and civilian interpreter Ayad Mansoor Sakat lost their lives in the attack, prompting President Donald Trump to authorize a forceful military response.

Saturday’s mission marks the second major wave of strikes in the operation, which began on December 19 with attacks on 70 ISIS targets across central Syria. That initial assault focused on destroying Islamic State infrastructure and weapons caches.

The renewed military action comes amid shifting dynamics in the region. Just one day before the U.S. strikes, Syrian officials announced their security forces had captured the military leader of ISIS operations in the Levant, dealing another blow to the militant organization that has sought to rebuild after losing its territorial caliphate.

The U.S. approach to Syria has evolved significantly in recent months, particularly following the ouster of longtime Syrian President Bashar Assad in December 2024. While the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces remain America’s primary partner in anti-ISIS operations, Washington has increasingly coordinated with Damascus’s central government.

In a notable development, Syria recently joined the global coalition against ISIS, signaling greater international alignment in combating the terrorist group that has maintained a stubborn insurgency despite significant territorial losses in recent years.

The persistent threat from ISIS underscores the challenges facing counterterrorism efforts in Syria, where political instability, humanitarian crises, and competing regional interests create a complex security environment. Despite significant setbacks, ISIS continues to demonstrate capability to carry out deadly attacks against international forces.

Military analysts suggest the ongoing strikes reflect the Trump administration’s determination to demonstrate that attacks on American personnel will trigger decisive responses. The operation also serves to reassure partners in the region of continued U.S. commitment to counterterrorism operations despite broader geopolitical tensions.

For the families of Torres-Tovar, Howard, and Sakat, the military response represents an effort to deliver justice, though it cannot erase their loss. Both National Guard members were deployed as part of the enduring U.S. mission to prevent an ISIS resurgence in the region.

As Operation Hawkeye Strike continues, questions remain about the long-term strategy for combating ISIS remnants in Syria and neighboring Iraq, where the group first emerged before declaring its so-called caliphate in 2014. While significantly diminished from its peak, the organization has proven resilient, adapting to a more decentralized structure focused on insurgent tactics rather than holding territory.

Military officials have not specified whether additional strikes are planned in the immediate future, but have emphasized the operation will continue until those responsible for the Palmyra attack are held accountable.
