US Special Forces Execute Daring Rescue of Downed Airmen from Iranian Territory

In a high-stakes military operation that unfolded like a Hollywood thriller, hundreds of American troops conducted a perilous rescue mission deep into the mountains of southwestern Iran to extract a wounded airman who had evaded capture for nearly two days.

The complex operation began Friday when an F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jet was shot down over Iran during ongoing U.S. combat operations in the region. Both crew members—the pilot and the weapon systems officer—successfully ejected before the aircraft crashed.

“This was an incredibly dangerous mission, an incredibly dangerous undertaking,” said Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, during a White House press briefing Monday.

The first crew member was rescued within hours of the crash in a daylight operation that faced immediate resistance. Rescue helicopters, including HH-60W Jolly Green II aircraft, came under small-arms fire from Iranian forces as they moved to extract the pilot. Although crew members aboard the helicopter sustained injuries, they successfully evacuated from Iranian territory.

Meanwhile, an A-10 Thunderbolt II providing close air support for the rescue was also hit by enemy fire. The aircraft was damaged, forcing the pilot to eject later over Kuwaiti airspace, where they were safely recovered.

The second crew member—an Air Force colonel and the weapon systems officer—remained at large, triggering a massive search operation. The injured officer climbed approximately 7,000 feet up a mountain ridge and concealed himself in a crevice for nearly 48 hours while treating his own wounds.

“He was injured quite badly,” President Donald Trump said during Monday’s briefing. “He scaled cliff faces, bleeding rather profusely, treated his own wounds.”

Iranian state media broadcast images from the crash site and offered rewards for information leading to the capture of the missing American, while Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) forces conducted searches throughout the region.

In response, the CIA launched a deception campaign to confuse Iranian forces while deploying specialized surveillance capabilities to locate the stranded airman. According to CIA Director John Ratcliffe, finding the downed officer was comparable to locating “a grain of sand in the desert.”

President Trump revealed that intelligence officials used advanced camera technology that spotted the weapon systems officer from 40 miles away. “They kept the camera on him for 45 minutes… We see something moving 40 miles away. It was the head of a human being,” Trump explained.

To ensure the officer’s safety, the U.S. executed “multiple large-scale strikes in the surrounding area using every tactical jet in the U.S. inventory plus B-1 Bombers,” according to a senior U.S. official. MQ-9 Reaper drones were deployed to protect the area, firing on any approaching threats.

The rescue operation reached its climax on Easter Sunday when dozens of heavily armed aircraft entered Iranian airspace. When the colonel finally made radio contact to coordinate pickup, he transmitted a simple message that confirmed his identity: “God is good.”

War Secretary Pete Hegseth noted the symbolic timing of the rescue: “Shot down on a Friday, Good Friday, hidden in a cave, a crevice all of Saturday and rescued on Sunday. Flown out of Iran as the sun was rising on Easter Sunday.”

The mission involved more than 150 aircraft and elite personnel from multiple special operations units, including Navy SEALs, Air Force Special Operations, Army Special Operations Aviation, search and rescue teams, and combat medics.

U.S. forces even established an impromptu airstrip inside Iran to support the operation. “This was not much of a runway,” Trump said. “This was a farm, not a runway.”

Both rescued airmen have been transferred to medical facilities, with one already receiving care at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany and the other en route to the same facility.

The successful extraction represents a significant tactical achievement amid ongoing tensions with Iran. Despite facing intense opposition, American forces completed both rescues without suffering any fatalities.

“The fact that we were able to pull off both of these operations, without a single American killed, or even wounded, just proves once again, that we have achieved overwhelming air dominance and superiority over the Iranian skies,” Trump stated on social media.
