Trump Administration’s Government Efficiency Initiative Shifts Strategy
The Department of Government Efficiency’s central office has closed its doors, but individual DOGE teams across federal agencies continue their mission to eliminate government waste and corruption, according to White House officials.
“President Trump was given a clear mandate to reduce waste, fraud, and abuse across the federal government, and he continues to actively deliver on that commitment,” White House spokeswoman Liz Huston told Fox News Digital on Monday.
The closure of DOGE’s central hub came to light after Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor told Reuters earlier this month that the central office “doesn’t exist.” Kupor later clarified on social media that while DOGE may no longer have centralized leadership under the United States Digital Service, its principles remain “alive and well.”
“The truth is: DOGE may not have centralized leadership under @USDS. But, the principles of DOGE remain alive and well: de-regulation; eliminating fraud, waste and abuse; re-shaping the federal workforce; making efficiency a first class citizen,” Kupor posted on X.
The White House has not provided details on when exactly the central office closed or what prompted its closure well before the July 2026 end date established in President Trump’s January executive order.
From Digital Service to Efficiency Initiative
DOGE was created when Trump renamed the United States Digital Service—an office established by former President Barack Obama in 2014—to the United States DOGE Service. The executive order directed agency heads to form their own DOGE teams to identify and eliminate wasteful spending and fraud.
Tech billionaire Elon Musk served as the public face of DOGE until May, when his relationship with the administration became strained over what Trump called the “big beautiful bill.” Musk criticized the legislation as an “outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill” and “disgusting abomination,” while Trump suggested Musk was upset about the bill’s cuts to electric vehicle mandates, which would affect Musk’s company Tesla.
Musk served as a special government employee, a position limited to 130 days. According to court filings, although Musk was DOGE’s public representative, he was not formally employed by the United States DOGE Service and did not report to its acting administrator.
Claimed Achievements and Controversies
According to DOGE’s website, which remains active, the initiative has saved $214 billion through various measures including “asset sales, contract/lease cancellations and renegotiations, fraud and improper payment deletion, grant cancellations, interest savings, programmatic changes, regulatory savings, and workforce reductions.” This translates to approximately $1,329.19 in savings per taxpayer.
The initiative has been controversial since its inception. Democrats and federal employees have staged protests outside federal buildings in Washington, D.C., specifically targeting the program and Musk’s involvement with it.
During his joint address to Congress in March, Trump highlighted examples of what he characterized as wasteful government spending uncovered by DOGE investigations. These included claims of “$22 billion for free housing and cars for illegal immigrants,” funding for “male circumcision in Mozambique,” and “$20 million for the Arab ‘Sesame Street’ in the Middle East.”
Campaign Promise to Governance Tool
Government efficiency was a cornerstone of Trump’s campaign platform as he sought to streamline federal operations and eliminate what he viewed as wasteful spending. Musk played a key role in promoting this agenda during the campaign, particularly in battleground states like Pennsylvania, where he frequently criticized government regulations that he claimed hampered private sector innovation.
Just days after his election victory in November 2024, Trump announced that Musk would lead DOGE alongside former GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, who later left the team to run for Ohio governor in 2026. Trump celebrated the office as potentially becoming “The Manhattan Project of our time.”
While the central office may have closed, the White House maintains that the mission continues through agency-specific teams working to implement DOGE’s efficiency principles throughout the federal government.

The cost guidance is better than expected. If they deliver, the stock could rerate.
