GOP Chair Remains Optimistic Despite Challenging Midterm Landscape

Despite facing significant political headwinds, Republican National Committee Chair Joe Gruters expressed confidence that the GOP will successfully defend its slim majorities in both the Senate and House during this year’s midterm elections.

“I think we’re on track. I still think that we have a chance to defy history and win the midterms,” Gruters said in an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital this week.

The Republican Party faces considerable challenges as the midterm elections approach. Historically, the party in power typically loses congressional seats during midterm cycles. Additionally, the GOP must contend with persistent inflation, rising gas prices linked to an increasingly unpopular war with Iran, and President Donald Trump’s underwater approval ratings.

One of the party’s primary concerns is mobilizing so-called “MAGA voters” – supporters who turn out reliably when Trump appears on the ballot but are less consistent during other elections. Gruters, a longtime Trump ally who was selected by the president last summer to lead the national committee, believes the former president’s planned campaign activities will be crucial to addressing this issue.

“I know it’s all doom and gloom out there, but we have the best messenger in President Trump that’s ever existed in the party,” Gruters stated. He noted that Trump will be “barnstorming the country” later this year, adding, “I think what he’s doing is rallying people. I think he could deliver these low propensity voters over and over again.”

The RNC currently holds a substantial fundraising and cash-on-hand advantage over the Democratic National Committee (DNC). Gruters, who worked as a certified public accountant before taking over the RNC and still serves as a Florida state senator, emphasized the importance of this financial edge.

“If we focus on what’s important to us, and that’s making sure we have the resources, making sure we have good candidates, following the president and his messaging, I think we will be successful,” he predicted.

Economic concerns, particularly inflation, helped propel Trump and Republicans to sweeping victories in 2024, when they reclaimed the White House and Senate while maintaining control of the House. However, Democrats point to their decisive victories in the November 2025 elections and strong performances in special elections as evidence that voters are responding to their messaging on affordability amid ongoing inflation concerns.

The latest Fox News national poll indicates that just 28% of voters approve of Trump’s handling of inflation, which voters rank as the most pressing issue. The survey also shows Democrats holding an eight-point advantage over Republicans when it comes to addressing high prices.

Gas prices have become a particular political vulnerability for the administration. The national average for regular gasoline currently hovers slightly above $4 per gallon, a surge attributed to Trump-ordered military actions against Iran. Democrats have seized on this issue, with DNC Chair Ken Martin charging that Trump “started a war that no one wanted, and now Americans are paying the price.”

“Donald Trump stuck everybody else with higher costs with no relief in sight. Americans literally can’t afford the Trump presidency,” Martin said in a statement.

Gruters, however, downplayed these concerns, telling Fox News Digital: “This conflict is temporary. I think the President knows exactly what he’s doing…I think by the time we hit November, we’re going to be in stride.”

Democrats, energized by recent ballot box victories, remain confident about their prospects. “Nearly every week, we’re seeing red districts go blue with historic, game-changing victories up and down the ballot,” Martin emphasized. “We have momentum on our side, but we refuse to take a single day for granted.”

The RNC chair dismissed the significance of Democratic victories in special elections. “These special elections are special for a reason,” he said. “The Democrats are motivated because of anger, because every time the president does something good, they get angrier.”

As the midterm campaign intensifies, Gruters remains confident in the Republican strategy. “By the time we hit the midterms, I think we’re going to be in full stride. We have great candidates, we have the right messaging, and I think we’ll be successful.”
