President Trump to Read Key Biblical Passage During Nationwide Scripture Event
President Donald Trump will participate in a nationwide Bible-reading event this week, reading from 2 Chronicles 7 in what organizers describe as a deliberately selected passage with deep significance in American prayer tradition.
The president will read verses 11-22 from the Oval Office as part of “America Reads the Bible,” a weeklong commemoration marking 250 years of the Bible’s presence in American life. The event will feature nearly 500 participants reading Scripture from Genesis to Revelation.
“We needed somebody special to read Second Chronicles chapter seven,” said Bunni Pounds, founder and president of Christians Engaged, in an exclusive interview. “As my director and I were praying over different sections of scripture, it came to us that this is such a critical passage for the body of Christ.”
According to Pounds, the passage was specifically reserved for Trump because of its historical significance in American public life. The section, particularly verse 14, has been central to American prayer for decades and is often invoked during times of national reflection.
“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land,” reads the verse that has become a staple of National Day of Prayer observances.
“We set it aside for him and have been praying for that for the last year,” Pounds explained.
The event’s online schedule shows that Trump’s reading was intentionally placed during a prime evening hour on Tuesday, alongside other notable participants like former HUD Secretary Ben Carson and various members of Congress.
Pounds believes Trump’s participation sends a broader message about faith’s role in American public life. “I think he’s sending a message that faith matters in this country, and that it’s important not only personally, but for our nation overall,” she said.
The White House has echoed this sentiment in a presidential message commemorating the event, describing the Bible as “indelibly woven into our national identity” and encouraging Americans to “rediscover” its formative role in shaping the nation.
The seven-day reading marathon, organized in partnership with the Museum of the Bible, will run from April 19 through April 25. All participants will read from the King James Version Easy Read edition, which has been licensed for the event’s livestream and a planned audiobook compilation of the readings.
The diverse roster of participants represents a cross-section of American society, including celebrities like actress Patricia Heaton and Candace Cameron Bure, political figures such as U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee and House Speaker Mike Johnson, alongside everyday Americans including single parents and small business owners.
Each hour of readings will be accompanied by worship music, with different ministries and organizations partnering throughout the event to create a comprehensive experience for viewers.
Pounds shared her impressions of Trump’s approach to the reading, noting, “They’re going to see how passionate he is about it, how deliberate he was. It really struck me to see the leader of the free world reading scripture from the Oval Office.”
She added that the president displayed humility during the recording and expressed her belief that “he would not have read it if he didn’t believe it.”
The event comes at a time of increased national focus on religious identity and the role of faith in public life. Recent studies have shown changing patterns in American religious participation, with some demographics moving away from organized religion while still maintaining spiritual beliefs.
“America Reads the Bible” begins at 9 a.m. ET on Sunday, with livestream options available for those wanting to participate remotely in what organizers hope will be a unifying national moment centered on America’s religious heritage.
