President Trump Reaches Out to Family of Slain College Student Killed in Chicago

President Donald Trump has spoken with the family of Sheridan Gorman, the 18-year-old Loyola University Chicago student who was allegedly killed by an undocumented immigrant earlier this month, Fox News has confirmed.

A White House official acknowledged the conversation on Monday but did not provide specific details about what was discussed between the president and Gorman’s grieving family members.

Gorman, who was originally from New York, was fatally shot in the early morning hours of March 19 while walking with friends near a pier in Chicago’s Rogers Park neighborhood, approximately one mile from campus. According to police reports, the shooting occurred around 1:06 a.m. at Tobey Prinz Beach.

Authorities have charged Jose Medina-Medina, 25, a Venezuelan national, with Gorman’s murder. According to Department of Homeland Security records, Medina-Medina was apprehended by U.S. Border Patrol on May 9, 2023, but was subsequently released into the United States under Biden administration policies. Officials also confirmed that the suspect had been previously arrested for shoplifting and released before the alleged murder.

The freshman student’s death has intensified ongoing national debate over immigration enforcement and sanctuary city policies. Chicago, which maintains sanctuary protections limiting cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities, has faced particular scrutiny in recent months as the city has received thousands of migrants bused from border states.

Gorman was just months away from completing her freshman year at Loyola, where she had been pursuing her undergraduate studies. Her death has profoundly affected both the university community and her hometown.

At an emotional vigil held Saturday in Yorktown Heights, New York, Gorman’s mother, Jessica Gorman, delivered a powerful message to supporters who gathered to honor her daughter’s memory.

“I want to say this gently, but honestly, as a mom. I’m angry,” Jessica Gorman told the crowd. “I’m like completely heartbroken, and we are going to fight for justice for our sweet Sheridan, and we’re going to fight for change.”

The Gorman family was joined by numerous community members who came to express their support and share in remembering Sheridan. Her parents, Tom and Jessica, along with her sister Madelon, were visibly moved by the outpouring of community solidarity.

The case has drawn national attention amid heightened political tensions surrounding immigration policy in an election year. Immigration has emerged as a central campaign issue, with Republican candidates including Trump highlighting cases involving crimes allegedly committed by people who entered the country illegally.

Law enforcement officials in Chicago have provided few additional details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting, though the investigation remains active. Medina-Medina is currently in custody facing murder charges.

This tragedy joins other high-profile cases that have sparked debate about immigration enforcement priorities and public safety concerns. Several families of victims in similar situations have become vocal advocates for policy changes, often calling for stricter border security measures and changes to how immigration cases are handled.

For the Gorman family, their focus remains on seeking justice for their daughter while navigating their profound loss. As the legal proceedings against Medina-Medina advance, they have indicated their commitment to ensuring that Sheridan’s memory catalyzes meaningful change.
