President Trump once again labeled Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene a “traitor” on Saturday following her announcement that she will resign from Congress, claiming her decision stemmed from “plummeting poll numbers” and her desire to avoid facing a primary challenger with Trump’s endorsement.
In a pointed Truth Social post, Trump wrote that Greene “went BAD” after he “refused to return her never ending barrage of phone calls.” He also criticized her relationship with Kentucky Republican Congressman Tom Massie, whom Trump described as “the WORST Republican Congressman in decades” and “Rand Paul Jr. because he votes against the Republican Party.”
Despite the harsh criticism, Trump concluded his statement by expressing appreciation for Greene’s service to the country.
The Georgia congresswoman announced late Friday that she would resign her seat effective January 5, 2026. Her decision comes just one week after Trump publicly withdrew his endorsement of the outspoken lawmaker, who had previously been one of his most vocal supporters in Congress.
In her resignation statement posted to X, Greene expressed growing disillusionment with Washington politics, condemning what she called a corrupt “Political Industrial Complex” that uses Americans as “pawns in an endless game of division.”
“Americans are used by the Political Industrial Complex of both political parties, election cycle after election cycle, in order to elect whichever side can convince Americans to hate the other side more,” Greene wrote. “And the results are always the same — nothing ever gets better for the common American man or woman.”
The deterioration of their once-close alliance has played out publicly in recent weeks. Trump has repeatedly attacked Greene, calling her “Wacky” and “a ranting lunatic” in a series of social media posts. Despite acknowledging that Trump’s criticisms were “hurtful,” Greene maintained that her core beliefs remain unchanged.
“My heart remains filled with joy, my life is filled with happiness, and my true convictions remain unchanged because my self worth is not defined by a man, but instead by God who created everything in existence,” she wrote in her statement.
The sudden break between Trump and Greene represents a significant shift in Republican Party dynamics. Greene had established herself as one of Trump’s most loyal defenders during his presidency and in the years following his 2020 defeat. She frequently echoed his claims of election fraud and defended his policies and statements, even when other Republicans distanced themselves.
Their falling out reportedly stems from personal disagreements rather than policy differences, with Trump suggesting Greene’s repeated attempts to contact him contributed to the rift. The public nature of their split has caught many Republican observers by surprise, given Greene’s previously unwavering support.
Greene’s resignation will trigger a special election in Georgia’s 14th congressional district, which the Cook Political Report rates as “Solid Republican.” The heavily conservative district, which encompasses northwestern Georgia, is expected to remain in Republican hands regardless of who replaces Greene.
Political analysts suggest the Trump-Greene split may reflect broader tensions within the Republican Party as it navigates its future direction. The very public nature of this falling out demonstrates how personal relationships and loyalty tests continue to shape Republican politics in the Trump era.
Greene, who was first elected to Congress in 2020, had built a national profile through controversial statements and confrontational tactics that resonated with the party’s base. Her departure from Congress marks the end of a brief but tumultuous tenure that embodied the combative style that has characterized much of contemporary Republican politics.
