Indiana Legislature Reconvenes to Consider Trump-Backed Redistricting Plan
The Republican-controlled Indiana House returns to session Monday to consider a congressional redistricting proposal strongly advocated by President Donald Trump, marking a significant development in the nationwide battle over electoral maps ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
In a notable reversal, the GOP-dominated state Senate also announced it will reconvene on December 8 to “make a final decision on any redistricting proposal sent from the House.” The move follows weeks of intense pressure from Trump, who has publicly threatened to back primary challenges against Republican lawmakers opposing his redistricting push.
State House Speaker Todd Huston confirmed last week that “House Republicans will gavel in on Monday, Dec. 1, reconvening the 2026 regular session. All legislative business will be considered beginning next week, including redrawing the state’s congressional map.”
The proposed changes would likely transform Indiana’s 1st Congressional District from Democratic-leaning to Republican-leaning, potentially adding another GOP seat to the state’s congressional delegation, which already includes seven Republicans among nine total representatives.
Republican Senate leader Rodric Bray, who had previously announced insufficient support for redistricting, has now changed course. “The issue of redrawing Indiana’s congressional maps mid-cycle has received a lot of attention and is causing strife here in our state. To resolve this issue, the Senate intends to reconvene as part of the regular 2026 session on Dec. 8,” Bray stated.
Trump has been particularly vocal in targeting Bray, writing in a social media post: “A RINO State Senator, Rodric Bray, who doesn’t care about keeping the Majority in the House in D.C., is the primary problem. Soon, he will have a Primary Problem, as will any other politician who supports him in this stupidity.”
The president has also directed criticism toward Indiana Governor Mike Braun, suggesting he “perhaps, is not working the way he should to get the necessary Votes.” While calling Braun “a good man,” Trump warned he “must produce on this, or he will be the only Governor, Republican or Democrat, who didn’t.”
Braun, responding to this pressure, has publicly committed to “standing with him on the critical issue of passing fair maps in Indiana to ensure the MAGA agenda is successful in Congress.”
The Indiana situation represents part of a nationwide Republican strategy to strengthen the party’s narrow House majority ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. Trump has been particularly focused on preventing a repeat of 2018, when Democrats reclaimed the House majority during his first term.
Several Republican-controlled states have already redrawn their congressional maps, including Texas, Missouri, North Carolina, and Ohio. Florida and Kansas are also considering similar changes. “We must keep the Majority at all costs,” Trump emphasized in a recent statement.
However, Republicans have faced setbacks in this redistricting campaign. Two federal judges in Texas ruled that the state cannot use its newly drawn map in next year’s elections, though the Supreme Court has temporarily stayed this ruling pending further consideration.
Democrats have launched their own counteroffensive. California voters recently approved Proposition 50, which temporarily bypasses the state’s nonpartisan redistricting commission and returns map-drawing power to the Democrat-controlled legislature. This is expected to create five more Democratic-leaning districts, offsetting similar Republican gains in Texas.
Other Democratic-controlled states are following suit. Illinois, Maryland, and Virginia—where Democrats control the legislature—are taking steps or seriously considering redistricting to favor their candidates.
Republicans suffered another setback in Utah, where a district judge rejected a map created by the Republican-dominated legislature and instead approved an alternate plan that creates a Democratic-leaning district for the 2026 midterms.
As the redistricting battle intensifies across the country, the outcome in Indiana could provide significant momentum to whichever party prevails, potentially influencing similar efforts in other states where congressional maps remain in dispute.
