President Trump nominates Fox News contributor Nicole Saphier for surgeon general after Casey Means’ nomination falters in the Senate over concerns about her qualifications and vaccine views.

President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he is nominating Dr. Nicole Saphier, a Fox News Channel medical contributor, to be the next U.S. surgeon general. The nomination comes after his previous pick, Dr. Casey Means, failed to gain sufficient support in the Senate amid questions about her experience and positions on vaccines.

“Dr. Saphier is a STAR physician who has spent her career guiding women facing breast cancer through their diagnosis and treatment,” Trump wrote in a social media post announcing his decision.

Saphier, a board-certified radiologist who specializes in breast imaging, has become a familiar face to Fox News viewers during her regular appearances discussing medical issues. She serves as director of breast imaging at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New Jersey and has authored books on healthcare policy and wellness.

The nomination represents a significant shift from Trump’s previous choice. Dr. Means, whose nomination had been championed by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., faced intense scrutiny during her confirmation hearing in February. Senators from both parties expressed concerns about her positions on vaccines and her relatively unconventional career path in medicine.

During that hearing, Republican Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, a physician himself, particularly pressed Means on vaccination issues, creating one of several tense exchanges that ultimately signaled trouble for her nomination. Earlier on Thursday, before announcing Saphier as his new pick, Trump had praised Means as “a strong MAHA Warrior” while criticizing what he called “intransigence and political games” from Senator Cassidy.

The withdrawal of Means’ nomination marks a setback for Kennedy, who had strongly advocated for her appointment. Kennedy, known for his own controversial views on vaccines, saw Means as aligned with his vision for transforming American healthcare through what supporters call the “Make America Healthy Again” (MAHA) movement.

Means, a Stanford-educated physician, had carved out a career focused on lifestyle medicine and as an entrepreneur after becoming disillusioned with traditional healthcare approaches. Her emphasis on dietary changes and lifestyle modifications to address chronic diseases resonated with Kennedy’s alternative health perspectives but ultimately proved too controversial for Senate confirmation.

Even after her difficult confirmation hearing, supporters from the MAHA movement had mounted a campaign to save her nomination, directing phone calls to potentially persuadable Republican senators like Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine. However, these efforts proved insufficient to overcome bipartisan concerns about her qualifications for the prominent public health position.

The surgeon general serves as the nation’s top doctor and leading spokesperson on matters of public health. The position carries significant influence in shaping health messaging and priorities, particularly during health emergencies like the COVID-19 pandemic, when the surgeon general’s office played a crucial role in communicating prevention measures to the public.

Saphier’s nomination will now move to the Senate for consideration. As a more mainstream medical figure with established credentials, she may face a smoother confirmation process than her predecessor, though all nominations in today’s polarized political environment face scrutiny.

The shift from Means to Saphier potentially signals a recalibration in Trump’s approach to health policy appointments, moving toward candidates with more traditional medical backgrounds who might garner broader support in the closely divided Senate.

Interesting development in the surgeon general nomination. It will be important to see Dr. Saphier’s qualifications and views on key public health issues. While experience in breast cancer care is valuable, the surgeon general role requires broad medical expertise.

Agreed. Her background as a medical commentator on Fox News raises some questions about potential political bias. The surgeon general should be a nonpartisan, science-based leader.

  3. As a radiologist, Dr. Saphier has relevant medical expertise, but the surgeon general role requires a broader public health focus. It will be important to closely examine her background and policy positions before confirming her nomination.

  4. Curious to learn more about Dr. Saphier’s views on issues like vaccine safety and efficacy. With the ongoing pandemic, the surgeon general’s voice on these topics is critically important. Transparency around her medical opinions is key.

    • Absolutely. The surgeon general must be a credible, trusted voice who can effectively communicate public health guidance, especially on sensitive issues like vaccines. Any doubts or controversies around the nominee’s positions could undermine their ability to serve effectively.

The shift from Dr. Means to Dr. Saphier is quite notable. I wonder what concerns were raised about Dr. Means’ experience and vaccine views that led to this change. Transparency around the selection process would be helpful for public trust.

Valid point. The surgeon general should be selected based on merit and ability to serve the public, not political considerations. Hopefully the new nominee will have the necessary qualifications and demonstrate a commitment to evidence-based public health guidance.
