President Trump has announced the National Mall’s reflecting pool is being repainted “American flag blue” as part of a renovation project he claims was neglected during the Biden administration.

During a recent Oval Office meeting with reporters, Trump revealed details of the makeover, holding up a photo showcasing the ongoing work. He explained that while his initial color preference was turquoise, “like in the Bahamas,” a trusted pool contractor convinced him otherwise.

“He said, ‘What color would you like, sir?’ I said, ‘Well, what about turquoise like in the Bahamas?’ He said, ‘Well, this is Washington, sir, we can give you turquoise, but why don’t you try… We have a color, it’s called “American flag blue.” I said, ‘That’s the color I like,'” Trump recounted. “He talked me into it very easily.”

The renovation project represents the latest in a series of beautification initiatives undertaken by the Trump administration since returning to the White House. Earlier this month, Trump took to Truth Social to announce he was working with Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to address the condition of the reflecting pool, which he described as “absolutely filthy.”

“This work was supposed to be done by the Biden Administration, but Sleepy Joe doesn’t know what ‘CLEAN’ or proper maintenance is — The President and Secretary do!” Trump wrote in his post.

The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool is one of the most iconic landmarks in Washington, D.C., stretching between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. As a popular tourist destination, it has been featured in countless photographs, films, and historic events, including Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech.

Maintenance of national monuments and landmarks typically falls under the purview of the National Park Service, which is supervised by the Department of the Interior. Such renovations generally involve complex planning processes, including environmental assessments and historical preservation considerations.

During his Oval Office remarks, Trump estimated the project would be completed within three weeks. “You’re going to end up with a beautiful, beautiful reflecting pool. The way it’s supposed to be. Much better than it ever was, actually,” he said.

Trump also emphasized the project’s efficiency, claiming it would be completed at “a fraction of the cost and a fraction of the time, and you get a better product than you could ever get the other way.”

This renovation comes amid other significant White House-related projects initiated by the Trump administration. Previous reports have indicated plans for a $300 million ballroom and discussions about other historic renovations to the White House grounds. Trump has also been involved in plans for a triumphal arch, though details about its location and design have not been fully disclosed.

The president invited media representatives to observe the renovation process, calling it “very exciting” while taking a subtle jab at the press.

National Mall renovations typically generate significant public interest, as the area hosts approximately 25 million visitors annually and represents a central gathering place for national celebrations, protests, and commemorations. Changes to such iconic spaces often spark debate among preservationists, historians, and the public about balancing modernization with historical integrity.

Neither the National Park Service nor independent historical preservation groups have publicly commented on the aesthetic changes to the reflecting pool or the potential historical implications of altering its traditional appearance.

Repainting the reflecting pool is an interesting move, though I’m not sure it’s the best use of taxpayer funds. Seems more like a vanity project than an essential upgrade. But I suppose Trump wants to leave his mark on the National Mall.

    • Mary G. Johnson on

That’s a fair perspective. While sprucing up national landmarks has value, this project does seem more about Trump’s personal branding than practical improvements. Curious to see if it’s well-received by the public.

  2. Olivia Davis on

Hmm, an American flag-themed reflecting pool? Seems like a rather bold, patriotic redesign choice. I’m curious to see how it turns out visually. Should make for an eye-catching backdrop for future events on the National Mall.

    • I agree, it’s an interesting choice. I wonder if the turquoise option would have had a more calming, natural look. But ‘American flag blue’ could create a striking visual statement.

  3. While I appreciate the desire to spruce up and maintain the National Mall, I’m not sure the reflecting pool color change is the most pressing or impactful use of government resources right now. But I suppose it’s a low-stakes way for Trump to flex his renovation muscles.

I agree, there are likely more important infrastructure and maintenance needs across the federal properties that could use attention. But I guess a patriotic facelift makes for a good headline.

An ‘American flag blue’ reflecting pool – that’s certainly a bold, patriotic design choice from Trump. I’m curious to see how the finished product looks. Hopefully it creates a nice, eye-catching centerpiece for the National Mall rather than coming across as gimmicky.

Agreed, the key will be whether the redesign is tastefully executed or comes across as too overt of a political statement. Aesthetics should take priority over partisan symbolism.

  5. Elizabeth Thompson on

An ‘American flag blue’ reflecting pool, huh? Sounds like a bold, patriotic design choice from Trump. I’m curious to see how it turns out visually. Hopefully it creates a nice focal point on the National Mall rather than coming across as too over-the-top.

    • Jennifer White on

Agreed, the key will be whether the redesign is tastefully executed. It could be an eye-catching, unifying symbol – or it could come across as a heavy-handed partisan statement. We’ll have to wait and see.

  6. Olivia Smith on

I’m a bit skeptical about the need for such a major renovation to the reflecting pool. Seems like a lot of taxpayer money being spent just to change the color. But I suppose Trump wants to put his own stamp on things as he returns to the White House.

    • Jennifer Martin on

That’s a fair point. The pool was likely functioning just fine before. Changing the color alone doesn’t seem like it would dramatically improve the aesthetics or usability of the space.

  7. John Hernandez on

The ‘American flag blue’ reflecting pool could make for a patriotic, eye-catching centerpiece on the National Mall. But I’m a bit concerned about the costs and whether this is the best use of government resources right now. Hopefully the final result will justify the investment.

    • I share those concerns. Maintaining and upgrading national monuments is important, but this seems more like a vanity project than a critical infrastructure need. The price tag will be important to scrutinize.
