President Trump Accuses Louisiana Senator of Blocking Surgeon General Nominee
President Trump launched a scathing attack against Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana on Thursday, accusing the Republican lawmaker of being “very disloyal” and playing “political games” by opposing the confirmation of his Surgeon General nominee, Dr. Casey Means.
In a strongly worded post on Truth Social, Trump criticized Cassidy, claiming the senator has “stood in the way” of confirming Means, whom he described as a “strong MAHA (Make America Healthy Again) Warrior.” The president further suggested that Louisiana voters should replace Cassidy, who faces primary challenges from state Treasurer John Fleming and Representative Julia Letlow.
“For months, Senator Bill Cassidy (of the GREAT State of Louisiana!), a very disloyal person whose ‘TRUMP’ Endorsement got him elected, but later voted to impeach ‘President Trump’ on what has now proven to be a total Hoax and Scam, has stood in the way of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s Nominee, Casey Means,” Trump wrote.
The president’s public rebuke highlights growing tensions between the administration and some Republican senators who have shown independence from the White House agenda. Cassidy, who chairs the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, previously expressed concerns about Means’ views on vaccinations during her confirmation hearing.
Calley Means, the nominee’s brother and a White House advisor, also publicly criticized Cassidy, calling him “a mindless avatar for his donors and a blind defender of the status quo system that is profiting from American sickness.”
He further alleged that Cassidy deliberately scheduled his sister’s confirmation hearing around her pregnancy due date, claiming the senator “demanded to schedule her hearing on her due date, and at the last minute scheduled it two days later.” According to Means, his sister “ended up having her baby the hour her first hearing was scheduled.”
The public dispute represents another instance of intra-party conflict within Republican ranks, as Trump continues to demand loyalty from GOP lawmakers. Cassidy, who voted to impeach Trump during his second impeachment trial, has maintained a level of independence that has clearly frustrated the president.
Following the public criticism of Cassidy, Trump announced he was withdrawing Means’ nomination and instead nominating Dr. Nicole Saphier, a former Fox News Channel contributor, for the position of Surgeon General. Trump praised Saphier as “a STAR physician” who has dedicated her career to guiding women through breast cancer diagnoses while “tirelessly advocating to increase early cancer detection and prevention for both men and women.”
The surgeon general nomination process has become increasingly politicized in recent years, reflecting broader divisions in healthcare policy. The position, while largely advisory, carries significant influence in shaping public health messaging and priorities for the administration.
Cassidy’s office has not yet responded to requests for comment on the president’s accusations or the withdrawal of Means’ nomination.
The Louisiana senator, who is facing reelection challenges, now finds himself in a difficult position with the president publicly encouraging voters to replace him. This puts additional pressure on Cassidy as he navigates the primary campaign in a state where Trump maintains strong support among Republican voters.
The episode underscores the continuing expectation of personal loyalty that President Trump demands from Republican officials, particularly on matters of appointments and nominations, and his willingness to publicly criticize those he perceives as insufficiently supportive of his agenda.

Interesting development in the ongoing tensions between Trump and some Republican lawmakers. While I don’t have strong opinions on the Surgeon General nominee, the political dynamics here are worth following closely.
Yes, this is definitely a storyline to keep an eye on. The growing divide within the GOP is something I’ll be watching as the 2024 election cycle approaches.
This seems like another example of the partisan gridlock that often plagues US politics. While I don’t have a strong stance on the Surgeon General nominee, I hope the lawmakers can find a way to work together constructively on this issue.
I don’t have a strong opinion on the merits of the Surgeon General nominee, but the public clash between Trump and Cassidy is an interesting window into the internal dynamics of the Republican Party. These intra-party feuds are worth monitoring.
This political dispute seems like political theater more than substantive policy disagreement. It’s important to look past the partisan rhetoric and understand the real issues at play around the Surgeon General nomination.
I agree, the public back-and-forth between Trump and Cassidy appears more about scoring political points than actual policy concerns. We should focus on the merits of the nominee rather than the personal attacks.
As an observer of US politics, I’m curious to learn more about the specifics of this nomination dispute and the policy positions of the different parties involved. Debates around public health leadership are important, even if the rhetoric gets heated.
