Trump Turns “No One Is Above the Law” Phrase Against Democrats Amid Minnesota Fraud Scandal
President Donald Trump has flipped a familiar Democratic talking point back on his political opponents following Minnesota Governor Tim Walz’s announcement that he will not seek re-election amid a massive fraud scandal rocking the state.
“Governor Walz has destroyed the State of Minnesota, but others, like Governor Gavin Newscum, JB Pritzker, and Kathy Hochul, have done, in my opinion, an even more dishonest and incompetent job. NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW!” Trump posted on Truth Social Monday afternoon.
The president’s statement represents a significant rhetorical pivot, as “no one is above the law” was a phrase repeatedly deployed by Democrats against Trump during his various legal battles between his first and second terms in office.
Walz, who recently served as Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate in the unsuccessful 2024 Democratic presidential campaign, announced his withdrawal from Minnesota’s gubernatorial race on Monday. In a written statement, Walz explained his decision: “As I reflected on this moment with my family and my team over the holidays, I came to the conclusion that I can’t give a political campaign my all. Every minute I spend defending my own political interests would be a minute I can’t spend defending the people of Minnesota.”
The governor’s decision comes as Minnesota faces intense scrutiny over allegations of widespread fraud that has led to dozens of arrests since 2022, primarily from the state’s Somali community. Investigators allege the scheme involved money laundering operations related to fraudulent meal and housing programs, daycare centers, and Medicaid services during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The scale of the fraud remains under investigation, with local officials suggesting it could exceed $1 billion, and potentially reach as high as $9 billion according to federal authorities. The magnitude has prompted calls for accountability from Republican lawmakers, with former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy suggesting Minnesota’s “entire Democrat administration” may need to resign.
Trump’s use of the “no one is above the law” phrase represents a strategic reversal of rhetoric that Democrats consistently aimed at him during his legal challenges. President Joe Biden employed the exact phrase after Trump was found guilty on 34 counts of falsified business records in a Manhattan court in May 2024.
Throughout Trump’s first term and between his administrations, prominent Democrats repeatedly emphasized this concept. Then-Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer stated in 2023, “As I’ve said before, no one is above the law, including Donald Trump,” following Trump’s indictment on 37 counts related to alleged mishandling of classified documents.
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi similarly invoked the phrase in 2019, stating that Democrats believe “no one is above the law, especially the president of the United States.” Representative Jerrold Nadler echoed this sentiment when introducing articles of impeachment against Trump that same year.
In his post, Trump added that “Minnesota’s Corrupt Governor will possibly leave office before his Term is up,” and expressed confidence that ongoing fraud investigations “will reveal a seriously unscrupulous, and rich, group of ‘SLIMEBALLS.'”
White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson reinforced the president’s position, telling Fox Digital: “It shouldn’t take an education from the Quality Learning Center for Democrats to understand this: Tim Walz and his Somali friends have been caught ripping off hardworking Minnesota taxpayers and now they will face the consequences.”
For his part, Walz has acknowledged responsibility for addressing the fraud. In December, he told reporters: “This is on my watch, I am accountable for this and, more importantly, I am the one that will fix it.” However, he has disputed Republican characterizations of the scandal’s magnitude, calling multibillion-dollar estimates “sensationalized.”
The situation continues to develop as federal and state investigators probe the full extent of the alleged fraud schemes that have cast a shadow over Minnesota’s state government.
