As global K-pop sensation TWICE approaches their tenth anniversary, the nine-member group shows no signs of slowing down. Speaking backstage at the Kia Forum during their “THIS IS FOR” World Tour, the members reflected on their remarkable journey together while emphasizing that there’s still significant creative territory to explore.

In a candid interview with Associated Press entertainment journalist Liam McEwan, Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Momo, Sana, Jihyo, Mina, Dahyun, Chaeyoung, and Tzuyu shared insights about their evolution from rookies to international superstars since their 2015 debut.

“Looking back, it’s almost surreal to think about how far we’ve come,” said leader Jihyo. “But what excites us most is knowing there’s so much more we can do as artists and as a group.”

The conversation centered on their anniversary release, “TEN: The Story Goes On,” a milestone project featuring solo tracks from each member—a first in the group’s extensive discography. This approach highlights the individual talents within TWICE while maintaining their cohesive group identity, a balancing act that has become increasingly important as members pursue various solo endeavors.

“Having our own solo tracks on this album feels like giving fans nine different colors of TWICE,” Nayeon explained. “We’ve always shown our chemistry as a group, but this project allows everyone to express their personal musical tastes and styles.”

The members described how their creative process has evolved, with group chats and collaborative meetings now playing a crucial role in shaping comebacks. This democratic approach to music-making represents significant growth from their early years, when they had less input on creative decisions.

“We’re much more involved in everything now,” Chaeyoung noted. “From concept discussions to song selection, choreography adjustments, and even styling—we voice our opinions and feel heard by our company.”

TWICE’s longevity in the notoriously fast-paced K-pop industry is particularly remarkable. While many groups struggle to maintain momentum beyond their seventh year—often referred to as the “seven-year curse” when many contracts expire—TWICE has defied expectations by continuing to break records and expand their global fanbase well into their ninth year.

The group also addressed one of their biggest creative challenges: how to innovate without abandoning the signature sound and image that attracted their devoted fanbase, known as ONCE.

“It’s about evolution, not transformation,” Mina reflected. “We want to grow and try new things without losing what makes TWICE special. Finding that balance is something we discuss a lot.”

Their growing international presence has included multiple world tours, English-language singles, and collaborations with Western artists. Most recently, they contributed the track “Takedown” to the popular Netflix animated series “KPop Demon Hunters,” further expanding their reach into global entertainment.

When asked about redefining success after achieving so many industry milestones, Dahyun offered a thoughtful response: “Success used to mean winning awards or topping charts, but now it’s more about sustainability and connection. Can we keep creating music that resonates with people? Can we continue enjoying this journey together? That’s success for us now.”

Industry analysts note that TWICE’s ability to maintain all nine original members through contract renewals—a rarity in K-pop—has been crucial to their sustained popularity. The group’s stable lineup has allowed them to develop deeper connections with fans while exploring subunit projects and solo activities without threatening group cohesion.

As they embark on their tenth year, TWICE appears poised to continue challenging conventions in K-pop, an industry where girl groups traditionally faced shorter career spans than their male counterparts.

“We’re grateful for these nine years together,” Tzuyu said, “but we’re not looking at this anniversary as a culmination—it’s more like opening a new chapter. The story really does go on.”
