President Trump pledges to unveil classified UFO documents, sparking renewed extraterrestrial debate

President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that the Pentagon is preparing to release “very interesting” UFO files, reigniting public fascination with the possibility of extraterrestrial life while drawing skepticism from experts familiar with government records.

Speaking at a White House event honoring NASA astronauts, Trump teased the imminent disclosure of previously unreleased government documents. “We’re going to be releasing a lot of things that we haven’t,” Trump said. “I think some of it’s going to be very interesting to people.”

The push began in February when Trump directed federal agencies to release their records related to “alien and extraterrestrial life, unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), and unidentified flying objects (UFOs).” This initiative follows his earlier order to release documents concerning the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and Martin Luther King Jr.—disclosures that ultimately revealed little new information.

“The first releases will begin very, very soon,” Trump told supporters at a Turning Point USA event in Phoenix last April, encouraging them to “figure out” if the phenomena are real.

Trump’s announcement comes amid ongoing Pentagon efforts to declassify UFO-related materials. In 2022, Congress established the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) to investigate UAP incidents and declassify information when possible. The agency released its first comprehensive report in 2024, documenting hundreds of new UAP incidents but finding no evidence confirming encounters with alien technology.

According to a Pentagon statement, AARO is now collaborating with the White House to release “never-before-seen UAP information.” However, Sean Kirkpatrick, the office’s former director who led the organization until 2023, cautions against inflated expectations.

“Readers should not get their hopes up that there’s going to be some document with photos, interviewing the aliens when they came down,” said Kirkpatrick, a physicist and former intelligence officer. “Because that just doesn’t exist.”

He explained that many viral videos purporting to show alien craft have mundane explanations, noting that modern military infrared cameras often capture hot objects like jet engines as elongated thermal images that can appear as mysterious pill-shaped objects moving at impossible speeds.

On Capitol Hill, a small contingent of Republican lawmakers has formed the Task Force on the Declassification of Federal Secrets to investigate mysterious aircraft sightings near military installations. The group, which includes Florida Representative Anna Paulina Luna, has criticized what they describe as inadequate transparency from the Defense Department.

Last fall, the task force heard testimony from service members describing unusual encounters. One senior Navy officer reported seeing a glowing “Tic Tac” shaped object emerge from the ocean off California’s coast in 2023, linking with three similar objects before vanishing at extraordinary speed.

Luna, who co-chairs the task force and has previously claimed to have seen evidence of “interdimensional beings,” demanded that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth provide dozens of UAP videos identified by whistleblowers. Her March letter went unanswered, but she celebrated Trump’s directive as preventing the Pentagon from hiding documents.

While Vice President JD Vance describes himself as “obsessed” with UFO files and has pledged to “get to the bottom” of Area 51 mysteries during his term, Trump himself appears more skeptical about extraterrestrial life. “I figured this was a good crowd because I know you people, you’re really into that. I don’t know if I am,” he told the Phoenix audience.

The renewed focus on UFOs coincides with growing cultural interest, including an upcoming Steven Spielberg film titled “Disclosure Day” and former President Barack Obama’s recent podcast comments about the likelihood of alien life, though he later clarified he had seen no evidence himself.

Presidential interest in UFOs has a long history. Bill Clinton ordered a review of the 1947 Roswell Incident for its 50th anniversary, while Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan both claimed to have witnessed UFOs before their presidencies. The U.S. government has investigated unexplained aerial phenomena since the 1940s, partly to determine if they represent foreign technological advances or potential “off-world technology.”

Greg Eghigian, a Pennsylvania State University professor who wrote a book on UFO sighting history, suggests that regardless of what documents emerge, true believers are likely to be disappointed.

“There is almost no satisfaction that is possible for many of the really die-hard folks,” he said. “So in a sense, I think disappointment can almost be guaranteed to be expected no matter what comes out of this.”

  1. As someone with a science background, I approach claims of alien life and UFOs with a healthy dose of skepticism. However, I’m always open to new information and data, especially from authoritative government sources. If these files do contain credible revelations, I’ll be eager to review the evidence objectively.

    • That’s a wise approach. Maintaining scientific objectivity while still being open-minded is important when dealing with such an extraordinary topic. I share your curiosity to see what emerges from these disclosures, if anything truly substantive.

  2. Isabella Moore on

I’m a bit skeptical about this – the government has a long history of overclassifying and withholding information. Still, if there are genuine revelations about unidentified aerial phenomena, that could be groundbreaking. I’ll be watching to see what actually gets released.

    • Elizabeth T. Taylor on

That’s a fair point. The government doesn’t have the best track record when it comes to transparency on sensitive topics like this. We’ll just have to wait and see what materializes.

  3. Olivia Johnson on

As an investor in mining and energy, I’m curious to see if there are any links between UFO sightings/activity and natural resource deposits. Could there be an extraterrestrial angle to some of the unexplained phenomena around rare earth metals and other critical minerals? Food for thought.

    • Ava Williams on

That’s an intriguing angle I hadn’t considered. If the government has been sitting on information about alien technology or involvement in earthly resource extraction, that could certainly have major geopolitical and economic implications. Worth keeping an open mind.

  4. Michael F. White on

This is exciting news, but I’ll reserve judgment until we actually see what gets released. Hopefully it’s more than just rehashed conspiracy theories. Some verifiable evidence of extraterrestrial activity would be truly groundbreaking. Can’t wait to learn more.

    • John E. Jackson on

I agree, solid evidence is key. Too often these types of disclosures end up being more sizzle than steak. But if there are genuine revelations, it could reshape our understanding of the universe. I’ll be following this story closely.

  5. Elizabeth Garcia on

Interesting to see the President hinting at releasing more UFO files. I wonder what kind of revelations might be in store – anything that could shed light on the extraterrestrial question? Definitely worth keeping an eye on this development.

    • Elizabeth Martin on

I agree, it will be fascinating to see what gets unveiled. Even if there’s no definitive proof of aliens, any new insights into UFO phenomena would be captivating.
