President Trump has endorsed Republican challenger Tano Tijerina in his race against Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar of Texas, just weeks after pardoning Cuellar in a corruption case. The surprise political move adds a new dimension to what was already a contentious congressional race in Texas.

In a statement posted to Truth Social on Tuesday, Trump declared his support for Tijerina while explaining his decision to pardon Cuellar in December. The pardon had been granted after the Department of Justice, under the Biden administration, indicted Cuellar and his wife for allegedly accepting approximately $600,000 in bribes from an Azerbaijan-owned energy company and a Mexican bank.

“Nobody knows Henry Cuellar better than Donald J. Trump,” the former president wrote. “I studied his records, learned about his financing, and listened to his two wonderful daughters beg me to help the mother and father that they love.”

Trump described the letters from Cuellar’s daughters as “heart-wrenching and beautiful,” noting that only he could “solve” their father’s legal troubles. The Cuellars reportedly faced up to 20 years in prison for the alleged corruption.

According to Trump, the case against Cuellar was politically motivated. “He and his wife were headed to jail for up to 20 years because he was ‘stupid’ in what he did but, above all, because the Biden Administration practiced Political Weaponization on Cuellar and his wife because they didn’t agree with his policies on the Southern Border,” Trump wrote.

The Justice Department had alleged that bribe payments to Cuellar were laundered through a series of front companies and middlemen into shell companies owned by his wife, Imelda, who reportedly performed “little to no legitimate work under the contracts.” In exchange, prosecutors claimed Cuellar agreed to use his congressional office to influence U.S. foreign policy in favor of Azerbaijan.

Trump’s endorsement of Tijerina represents a significant political calculation in a border district that has grown increasingly competitive. Cuellar, who has served in Congress since 2005, is considered one of the more conservative Democrats in the House, particularly on immigration and border security issues.

In his endorsement, Trump acknowledged some alignment with Cuellar’s border policies, describing the Democrat as “a weak and incompetent version of me, who wanted the Border closed to criminals, drug dealers, people from mental institutions and, above all, murderers and heavy-handed criminals.” However, Trump claimed Cuellar’s views were “not strong” enough, which ultimately led to his decision to support Tijerina.

The former president also expressed surprise that Cuellar would continue his political career after the pardon. “In doing so, I never assumed he would be running for Office again, and certainly not as a Democrat,” Trump wrote.

Tijerina brings an interesting background to the race. A former professional baseball player drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in 1993, he later transitioned to politics and served three terms as Webb County judge after retiring from baseball. His candidacy now receives a significant boost from Trump’s endorsement.

The 28th Congressional District of Texas, which Cuellar represents, includes parts of the U.S.-Mexico border and has been a Democratic stronghold. However, Republicans have made inroads in South Texas in recent elections, with border security and immigration emerging as dominant issues for voters in the region.

Following his pardon, Cuellar had publicly thanked Trump, stating it came as a surprise while he was preparing for his re-election campaign. Despite speculation about whether he might switch parties after receiving the pardon, Cuellar has remained a Democrat.

The unusual situation of Trump pardoning a Democratic congressman only to endorse his opponent weeks later underscores the complex political dynamics at play in competitive border districts as both parties jockey for advantage in the upcoming election cycle.
