President Trump drew laughter at the U.S.-Saudi Investment Forum in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday when he claimed Saudi Arabians think Americans are “crazy” for allowing transgender athletes to compete in women’s sports.

Speaking at the Kennedy Center event, Trump described his shock at watching a congressman advocate for allowing transgender women to participate in women’s sports. He specifically referenced a case involving a transgender weightlifter who broke a women’s record.

“The man was 119 pounds higher than a woman champion, who was a phenomenal champion,” Trump said. “Beat her by 119, and he was an average lifter prior to transitioning. A lot of the Saudis are sitting here saying, ‘What the hell is he talking about — transitioning?'”

Trump continued his remarks by suggesting cultural differences between the United States and Saudi Arabia on transgender issues. “The Saudis are saying, ‘What is he talking about?'” Trump said. “They’re saying, ‘What do you mean women are playing against men? No, that doesn’t happen, does it?’ Yeah, it does. These people are crazy.”

The forum, which featured prominent attendees including Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, highlighted the growing economic ties between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia. However, Trump’s comments underscored cultural and policy differences between the two nations on social issues.

Trump’s remarks come amid ongoing national debate about transgender athletes in women’s sports. Recently, 130 congressional Democrats filed an amicus brief to the Supreme Court supporting transgender athletes in two high-profile cases. The brief urges justices to rule in favor of Becky Pepper-Jackson, a transgender teen who challenged a West Virginia law barring transgender girls from competing in girls’ sports, and Lindsay Hecox, who successfully challenged a similar Idaho law to compete on Boise State’s women’s cross-country team.

The Democratic lawmakers who signed the brief include Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Despite this political support, public opinion appears divided on the issue. A New York Times/Ipsos survey from January found that a significant majority of Americans, including 67% of those who identified as Democrats or leaning Democratic, do not believe transgender women should compete in women’s sports. Of the 2,128 survey participants, 79% overall opposed allowing biological males who identify as women to compete against women in sporting events.

The issue of transgender athletes in women’s sports has become increasingly politicized in recent years, with numerous states implementing legislation restricting transgender participation in athletics. These laws have faced legal challenges, with some cases potentially heading to the Supreme Court for final resolution.

Trump’s comments at the investment forum represent the latest instance of the former president wading into cultural issues that resonate with his political base. Throughout his political career, Trump has frequently criticized progressive positions on gender identity and transgender rights, positions that align with many conservative voters.

The U.S.-Saudi Investment Forum highlighted the complex relationship between the two nations, which balances economic cooperation with significant differences in social values and human rights approaches. While focusing on investment opportunities and economic partnerships, the event also revealed the cultural divides that persist between the United States and Saudi Arabia.
