Trump and Mamdani Find Common Ground in Oval Office Meeting Despite Political Differences

President Donald Trump welcomed New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani to the Oval Office on Friday, marking a historic first meeting between the MAGA leader and the socialist politician who has been labeled a “communist” by the Trump administration.

Despite their stark ideological differences, the two found unexpected unity during their meeting, focusing primarily on shared goals to improve New York City.

“We have one thing in common,” Trump told reporters after opening the Oval Office doors to the media. “We want this city of ours that we love to do very well. And I wanted to congratulate the mayor. He really ran an incredible race against, you know, a lot of smart people, starting with the early primaries against some very tough people, very smart people.”

The president highlighted several areas of common interest, particularly affordable housing and addressing rising costs of living. “I think you’re going to have, hopefully, a really great mayor and the better he does, the happier I am,” Trump said. “I will say there’s no difference in party, there’s no difference in anything. And we’re going to be helping him, to make everybody’s dream come true, having a strong and very safe New York.”

The meeting garnered significant attention, with Trump noting that despite hosting many high-profile events with foreign leaders, his meeting with the next mayor of New York City drew “hundreds of people waiting” outside while only a small group of reporters were permitted inside the Oval Office.

Just hours before the meeting, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt had referred to Mamdani as a “communist” while emphasizing that Trump’s doors remain open to any U.S. leader regardless of political affiliation.

During the press event, Mamdani stood beside the seated president, expressing appreciation for the meeting’s productive focus. “What I really appreciate about the president is that the meeting that we had focused not on places of disagreement, which there are many, and also focused on the shared purpose that we have in serving New Yorkers,” Mamdani said.

He emphasized the importance of addressing the cost-of-living crisis affecting New York’s 8.5 million residents, noting that “one in four [are] living in poverty.” The mayor-elect said their discussions repeatedly returned to “what it could look like to lift those New Yorkers out of struggle and start to deliver them a city that they could do more than just struggle to afford it, but actually start to live in it.”

A notable moment occurred when Fox News correspondent Jacqui Heinrich pressed Mamdani on his past characterization of Trump as a “fascist.” Before Mamdani could fully respond, Trump interjected, saying, “That’s OK. You can just say yes,” adding, “It’s easier than explaining it. I don’t mind.”

Despite this exchange, Trump praised Mamdani as a “rational person” who has the potential to make New York City safer and more affordable. “I met with a man who wants to… really wants to see New York be great again,” Trump said, reflecting on the city’s decline in recent years.

Trump also suggested that Mamdani might evolve in his political views. “He’s got views that are a little out there, but who knows? And then we’ll get to see what works, or he’s going to change also. We all change,” Trump remarked. “I changed a lot. Changed a lot from when I first came to office… My first term was great. We had the greatest economy in the history of our country. We’re doing even better now.”

Addressing concerns about antisemitism, Mamdani concluded the press event by affirming his commitment to Jewish safety in the city. “I care very deeply about Jewish safety, and I look forward to rooting out antisemitism across the five boroughs and protecting Jewish New Yorkers,” he stated.

Mamdani won his election on November 4, defeating Republican challenger Curtis Sliwa and former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent after losing the Democratic primary to Mamdani earlier this year. He will be sworn in as New York City’s mayor on January 1.
