President Trump defends the fatal shooting of a Minnesota woman by an ICE officer during a wide-ranging interview with The New York Times on Wednesday, just hours after the incident occurred. The president showed footage of the scene to reporters in the Oval Office.

“I want to see nobody get shot. I want to see nobody screaming and trying to run over policemen either,” Trump told the assembled journalists as they questioned him about the shooting of Renee Nicole Good.

The fatal encounter took place amid a large-scale federal operation in Minnesota targeting a massive fraud scandal that has rocked the state. According to investigators, the operation has been focused on exposing alleged money laundering schemes operating through fraudulent meal and housing programs, daycare centers, and Medicaid services. Since 2022, dozens of arrests have been made, primarily within Minnesota’s Somali community.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem defended the shooting, claiming Good was engaged in an “act of domestic terrorism” targeting federal law enforcement officers. According to Noem, agents ordered Good to exit her vehicle, which she refused to do before “attempting to run them over and ram them with her vehicle.”

During the two-hour interview, Trump had an aide bring in a laptop to show the New York Times reporters footage of the incident, which took place on a snow-lined residential street in Minneapolis. “That was a vicious situation that took place,” Trump stated.

The president repeatedly emphasized that while the situation was tragic, he believed Good had acted aggressively. “She behaved horribly,” Trump said. “And then she ran him over. She didn’t try to run him over. She ran him over.”

The shooting has sparked significant backlash, with Democratic lawmakers and critics of the Trump administration condemning the incident. Some have labeled it a “murder,” and protesters have taken to the streets of Minneapolis in response.

In a Truth Social post following the interview, Trump elaborated on his position, stating that after reviewing the footage, he believed the woman was “very disorderly, obstructing and resisting, who then violently, willfully, and viciously ran over the ICE Officer, who seems to have shot her in self-defense.” He added that “the reason these incidents are happening is because the Radical Left is threatening, assaulting, and targeting our Law Enforcement Officers and ICE Agents on a daily basis.”

The White House later posted on social media in support of law enforcement, stating: “We stand with the brave men and women of ICE and law enforcement who risk everything to keep our communities safe.”

This incident comes amid a reported surge in violence against ICE officers. According to the Department of Homeland Security, assaults and violent attacks against ICE law enforcement officers have increased by more than 1,150% compared to the previous administration. The department reported 238 assaults on ICE officers between January and November 2025, compared to just 19 during the same timeframe in 2024.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has reportedly prepared the National Guard in response to the shooting, though he emphasized the state has “never been at war” with the federal government.

The ongoing fraud investigation in Minnesota and the fatal shooting of Good highlight the increased tensions surrounding immigration enforcement actions under the Trump administration, which has made cracking down on illegal immigration a cornerstone policy since returning to office in January 2025.
