President Trump inspected a $1.8 million renovation of the National Mall’s Reflecting Pool on Thursday, driving his motorcade through the drained landmark to highlight what he described as a cost-effective restoration project.

Standing on the exposed floor of the 2,000-foot pool that stretches between the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument, Trump criticized a previous $38 million renovation completed during the Obama administration in 2012, calling it a “construction nightmare” that leaked immediately after completion.

“The color was never good because basically it had a gray stone underneath,” Trump told reporters at the site. “Now it’s going to have the great color. It’s going to last a long time and you’ll have no leak—guaranteed.”

The president revealed he personally selected “American Flag Blue” as the color for the new surface coating. The renovation includes applying an industrial-strength sealant designed to prevent the chronic leaking problems that have plagued the iconic landmark for years.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum joined Trump at the inspection. The administration emphasized the project’s efficiency, claiming that while previous National Park Service estimates for repairs had reached as high as $355 million with a multi-year timeline, their team is completing the work in just two weeks at a fraction of the cost.

The Reflecting Pool is one of Washington’s most visited landmarks, attracting millions of tourists annually. It has served as the backdrop for numerous historic events and presidential ceremonies throughout American history, making its maintenance a matter of national significance.

This restoration project represents part of a broader beautification initiative for the nation’s capital under Trump’s direction. Secretary Burgum noted that the Department of the Interior has recently cleared more than 1,000 graffiti sites and 82 homeless camps in Washington, D.C.

“We’ve never had a president who has cared more, invested more, or put more time and attention into everything about the Mall,” Burgum said during the inspection.

The National Park Service’s previous major rehabilitation of the Reflecting Pool, completed a decade ago during the Obama administration, addressed structural issues but apparently failed to fully resolve the site’s persistent leaking problems, according to the current administration.

Urban parks and historic monuments have faced increasing maintenance challenges nationwide, with the National Park Service reporting a maintenance backlog of nearly $22 billion across its properties as of 2022. The Reflecting Pool project highlights the ongoing debate about infrastructure investment priorities and maintenance approaches for national landmarks.

Trump also previewed several upcoming projects planned for the National Mall area, including improvements to the Lincoln Memorial Undercroft and a proposed Triumphal Arc. However, specific details regarding timelines, funding sources, and final approvals for these additional projects were not provided during the visit.

Preservationists have often emphasized the delicate balance between modernization and historical preservation when undertaking such renovations. The National Mall, designed by Pierre Charles L’Enfant in 1791 and later refined by the McMillan Commission in 1902, represents one of America’s most carefully protected public spaces.

The renovation comes as Washington, D.C. prepares for the summer tourist season, when visitor numbers to the National Mall typically peak. The Reflecting Pool restoration is expected to be completed before the height of the season, allowing visitors to experience the newly renovated landmark.

The pool has been a centerpiece of the National Mall since its construction in the early 20th century and gained particular prominence as the site of Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech during the 1963 March on Washington.
