President Trump has declared victory in Chicago following a contentious immigration enforcement operation that has reportedly led to significant drops in crime rates, despite fierce opposition from local Democratic officials.

In a Tuesday night post on Truth Social, Trump announced that since the launch of “Operation Midway Blitz” by the Department of Homeland Security, Chicago has seen dramatic decreases in criminal activity. According to the President, shootings have declined by 35%, robberies by 41%, and carjackings by nearly 50%.

“I am proud to announce that Chicago, Illinois, despite all of the radical opposition and obstruction we have from the Mayor and the Governor, has seen Car Theft, Shootings, Robberies, Violent Crime, and everything else, drop dramatically,” Trump wrote.

The President emphasized these improvements came after deploying only “a small initial Federal Force, not the full ‘surge'” of federal resources. “As we ramp up more assets, these numbers will continue to drop,” he added.

Operation Midway Blitz, which began on September 8, has involved federal agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Border Patrol, and other agencies flooding the Chicago area. The operation has reportedly resulted in thousands of arrests, including those of violent criminals and gang members.

The federal initiative has been met with significant pushback from Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, both Democrats who have expressed opposition to the enforcement operations in their sanctuary city. Trump criticized what he called “extraordinary resistance” from the local Democratic leadership.

The confrontations have gone beyond political rhetoric. There have been multiple violent incidents involving members of the public attempting to interfere with federal operations. In one incident in Chicago’s Little Village neighborhood, shots were fired at Border Patrol agents. According to federal sources, a Mexican citizen with a criminal history was arrested in connection with the shooting after allegedly firing from a Jeep before fleeing the scene.

“This incident is not isolated and reflects a growing and dangerous trend of violence and obstruction,” a Department of Homeland Security statement noted. “Over the past two months, we’ve seen an increase in assaults and obstruction targeting federal law enforcement during operations.”

The tensions between federal and local authorities have continued to escalate. Governor Pritzker criticized Border Patrol officials for posing in front of Chicago’s famous “Bean” sculpture, calling it “disgusting” and claiming they were “making fun of our neighborhoods and communities.”

Pritzker further stated that Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino “and his masked agents are not here to make Chicago safer,” adding that “as children are tear gassed and U.S. citizens detained, they are posing for photo ops and producing reality TV moments.”

For his part, Mayor Johnson signed an executive order in October establishing “ICE-free zones” by prohibiting the use of city parking lots and garages for civil immigration enforcement activities. This move was seen as a direct attempt to limit federal operations in the city.

The situation in Chicago represents the growing divide between the Trump administration’s aggressive immigration enforcement policies and sanctuary jurisdictions led by Democratic officials. The administration has prioritized cracking down on illegal immigration and targeting sanctuary cities that limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

Immigration policy experts note that such confrontations between federal and local authorities over immigration enforcement have intensified during Trump’s presidency, with both sides claiming to act in the interest of public safety but from vastly different perspectives on how to achieve it.

Neither Governor Pritzker nor Mayor Johnson immediately responded to requests for comment on the President’s claims regarding crime reduction.
