President Trump has accused House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of inciting the recent assassination attempt at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, escalating an already tense political confrontation between the two high-profile leaders.

In a Thursday post on Truth Social, Trump claimed Jeffries should face criminal charges for promoting “maximum warfare” against Republicans just days before the April assassination scare. “This lunatic, Hakeem ‘Low IQ’ Jeffries, should be charged with INCITING VIOLENCE!” Trump wrote to his 12.6 million followers.

The former president’s post included images juxtaposing Jeffries with a “maximum warfare” sign alongside pictures of Trump and aide James Blair. Trump contrasted this with surveillance footage showing alleged would-be assassin Cole Allen rushing a Secret Service checkpoint at the Washington Hilton during the correspondents’ dinner.

Jeffries quickly dismissed Trump’s allegations, referring to them as “another deranged rant” and redirecting attention to economic issues affecting Americans. “Gas prices are sky high, grocery bills are surging and families can’t catch a break,” Jeffries responded on X, formerly Twitter. “Democrats are about to take back the House and you’re losing your mind.”

The confrontation stems from Jeffries’ controversial “maximum warfare” rhetoric regarding nationwide redistricting battles. Republicans have criticized the language as inflammatory, particularly in the current climate of heightened political tensions. The phrase first gained attention when Jeffries displayed it on a sign during a press conference addressing gerrymandering strategies.

When previously challenged about his choice of words, Jeffries refused to back down. “I don’t give a damn about your criticism,” he told Republican critics in late April. He has maintained that the phrase originated from an anonymous White House staffer who used it in a New York Times interview last year when discussing GOP redistricting strategies.

“That phrase ‘maximum warfare everywhere, all the time’ came from the White House in the summer of 2025, when they started this redistricting battle, and now they’re big mad,” Jeffries explained at a news conference. “Why? Because Democrats have decided to finish it. Get lost.”

The exchange highlights the increasingly confrontational nature of American political discourse as the nation approaches midterm elections. Redistricting battles have become particularly contentious, with both parties accusing each other of manipulating electoral maps for partisan advantage.

Despite refusing to retract his combative language, Jeffries has consistently stated his opposition to all forms of political violence. During a recent appearance on “Fox News Sunday,” he emphasized that lawmakers should “set the most appropriate example” in their rhetoric, particularly given concerns about rising political violence.

“Whatever your ideological perspective is, we all love America, and we all want to make sure that this country is the best that it can possibly be,” Jeffries said during the interview.

This latest clash occurs against the backdrop of growing concerns about political violence in America. The April incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner follows a previous assassination attempt against Trump during a campaign rally in July 2023, raising serious questions about the security of political figures and the potential consequences of inflammatory political rhetoric.

As both parties prepare for crucial midterm elections, the heated exchanges between Trump and Jeffries reflect the high stakes and deep divisions that continue to characterize American politics, with each side accusing the other of endangering democracy while claiming to be its defender.
