President Trump dismissed rumors of dissatisfaction with Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem on Wednesday, calling her performance “fantastic” and praising the administration’s border security achievements.
“I read a story recently that I’m unhappy with Kristi — I’m so happy with her… We have a border that’s the best border in the history of our country. Why would I be unhappy? She’s fantastic, actually,” Trump told reporters during a business leader roundtable at the White House.
The president’s comments directly contradict a recent report by MS Now claiming Noem was on “very thin ice” within the administration. According to that report, Trump was allegedly considering replacing Noem as early as January, with White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy Stephen Miller supposedly leading efforts to remove her.
The report suggested that Miller and other administration officials were frustrated with Noem’s pace in establishing new detention centers. It also claimed several governors had complained to Trump about her management of FEMA and disaster relief funds.
The White House firmly rejected these claims on Monday, with spokeswoman Abigail Jackson stating: “Everything about this is total Fake News. Secretary Noem is doing a great job implementing the President’s agenda and making America safe again. MS Now continues to beclown themselves by inventing narratives that simply are not true.”
DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin offered an even more pointed response, telling Fox News Digital, “I can’t speak for the president, but I’ve seen more credible reporting on Big Foot.”
Noem has faced criticism in recent months regarding her management of disaster relief operations. In August, she publicly defended her vision for FEMA’s role in emergency response amid hurricane recovery efforts in several states. Some governors reportedly expressed concerns about the allocation of federal resources under her leadership.
The Department of Homeland Security, which Noem has led since Trump’s return to office, oversees a wide range of critical functions including border security, immigration enforcement, disaster response, and cybersecurity. As one of the largest federal departments, DHS’s operations have significant implications for national security and domestic policy implementation.
During the same roundtable event, Trump also dismissed rumors of discord with War Secretary Pete Hegseth regarding controversial U.S. military strikes on suspected drug smuggling vessels. The president described his feelings toward Hegseth’s performance as “very much the opposite” of what had been reported, calling him “phenomenal.”
In a lighter moment, Trump joked that he would “have to think about” Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, who was present at the table, before going on to praise him. The president also expressed satisfaction with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Education Secretary Linda McMahon.
The public vote of confidence in Noem comes at a time when the administration has been highlighting its border security efforts as a signature achievement. Immigration enforcement was a central campaign promise during Trump’s successful 2024 presidential bid, and his administration has implemented aggressive policies aimed at reducing illegal border crossings.
Noem, the former governor of South Dakota, has been one of the administration’s most visible cabinet members, frequently appearing alongside the president at events focused on border security and law enforcement. Her appointment to lead DHS was seen as a reward for her loyalty during the campaign and her alignment with Trump’s immigration policies.
The apparent tension within the administration, if the reports had any merit, would have represented a significant shift in one of the president’s most important cabinet relationships. However, Trump’s emphatic denial appears to have put such speculation to rest, at least for now.
