President Trump ordered a comprehensive federal review of all U.S. childhood vaccine recommendations Friday, following a CDC advisory committee’s decision to end its long-standing guidance for administering hepatitis B vaccines to newborns at birth.

“Today, the CDC Vaccine Committee made a very good decision to END their Hepatitis B Vaccine Recommendation for babies, the vast majority of whom are at NO RISK of Hepatitis B, a disease that is mostly transmitted sexually, or through dirty needles,” Trump wrote in a statement.

The president’s directive comes amid growing debate about the appropriate number and timing of childhood vaccinations in the United States compared to other countries. Trump signed a presidential memorandum instructing the Department of Health and Human Services to “fast track” an evaluation of vaccine schedules from around the world to potentially realign U.S. practices.

In his statement, Trump criticized what he described as an excessive vaccination schedule for American children. “The American Childhood Vaccine Schedule long required 72 ‘jabs,’ for perfectly healthy babies, far more than any other Country in the World, and far more than is necessary,” he wrote. “In fact, it is ridiculous! Many parents and scientists have been questioning the efficacy of this ‘schedule,’ as have I!”

The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) met Friday at CDC headquarters in Atlanta where they voted to remove the recommendation that all newborns receive the hepatitis B vaccine immediately after birth. The committee determined this universal approach was unnecessary for healthy infants born to mothers without the infection.

The change represents a significant shift in preventative health policy that has been in place for decades. The hepatitis B vaccine has been routinely administered to newborns since the 1990s as part of efforts to prevent the spread of the viral liver infection, which can lead to chronic disease and, in some cases, liver cancer.

Not all officials support the change. At least one Republican senator has already voiced opposition to the CDC committee’s decision, calling it “a mistake” that could potentially lead to increased infection rates.

Hepatitis B is primarily transmitted through blood and bodily fluids. While sexual contact and needle-sharing are common routes of transmission in adults, infants can contract the virus from infected mothers during childbirth. The universal vaccination policy was implemented partly to ensure protection for all children, including those whose mothers may have undetected infections.

Trump expressed confidence that his recently appointed HHS Secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., will lead the vaccine schedule review effectively. “I am fully confident Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., and the CDC, will get this done, quickly and correctly, for our Nation’s Children,” Trump stated.

Kennedy’s appointment has been controversial given his history of questioning vaccine safety, though he has pledged to follow scientific evidence in his role as HHS Secretary. His involvement in this review will likely be closely scrutinized by both medical professionals and public health advocates.

The new directive represents one of Trump’s first major public health policy initiatives since returning to office. Public health experts remain divided on the implications of potentially reducing recommended vaccinations, with proponents of the current schedule arguing it has helped eliminate or significantly reduce numerous childhood diseases over decades.

The White House did not immediately respond to requests for additional details about the timeline or specific parameters of the vaccine schedule review. Health officials and medical organizations across the country will be watching closely as the administration develops its approach to childhood immunization policy.
