The Justice Department has appointed former Trump attorney Joseph diGenova to lead an investigation into ex-CIA Director John Brennan and others regarding the origins of the Trump-Russia investigation. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche selected diGenova as counsel overseeing the matter, according to a New York Times report, placing a former Trump legal representative in a key position within this high-profile probe.

A federal grand jury has been impaneled in Miami since late last year as part of this investigation. DiGenova, who previously served as U.S. attorney for Washington, D.C., has been a vocal critic of Brennan, repeatedly accusing him of misconduct related to the Russia investigation’s beginnings – accusations that have not yet resulted in criminal charges.

During a 2018 Fox News appearance, diGenova directly accused Brennan of colluding with the FBI and Department of Justice to frame then-President Donald Trump. These claims align with persistent arguments from Trump allies that intelligence and law enforcement officials improperly initiated the Russia probe that dominated much of Trump’s first term in office.

The appointment marks a significant reshuffling in the leadership of this sprawling inquiry. DiGenova replaces Maria Medetis Long, a national security prosecutor from the South Florida U.S. attorney’s office who had been overseeing both a false statements investigation related to Brennan and broader conspiracy-related inquiries.

As the investigation proceeds, federal investigators have issued subpoenas seeking information connected to intelligence assessments of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. These assessments, which concluded that Russia had interfered to benefit Trump’s candidacy, have been a contentious political issue since their release.

Brennan has consistently denied any wrongdoing related to the Russia investigation and has defended the intelligence community’s assessment that Moscow interfered in the 2016 election. As CIA Director during the Obama administration, Brennan was a central figure in the intelligence community’s response to Russian election interference activities.

The investigation into the origins of the Russia probe represents the latest chapter in a years-long political battle over the legitimacy of the investigation that examined potential ties between the Trump campaign and Russia. Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, which concluded in 2019, did not establish a criminal conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Russia but detailed numerous contacts between campaign officials and Russian-linked individuals.

DiGenova’s appointment carries significant political implications given his previous role representing Trump during the Mueller investigation. His selection to lead this probe could be viewed as placing a partisan figure in charge of an investigation with major political ramifications, particularly as Trump seeks the presidency again in 2024.

Legal experts have noted that investigations into the origins of the Russia probe have produced limited results thus far. Special Counsel John Durham, who was appointed by then-Attorney General William Barr to investigate potential misconduct in the Russia investigation, secured just one guilty plea from a former FBI lawyer who altered an email used in a surveillance application.

The Justice Department’s decision to impanel a grand jury in Miami and issue subpoenas indicates this investigation remains active and could potentially lead to charges. The focus on Brennan suggests investigators are examining high-level intelligence decisions made during the 2016 campaign and transition period.

For his part, Brennan has maintained that the intelligence community acted appropriately based on the information available at the time regarding Russian interference activities. He has become a frequent target of criticism from Trump and his allies, who view him as a key figure in what they characterize as a politically motivated investigation.
