The 2026 primary season begins Tuesday with critical contests in Texas, North Carolina, and Arkansas that could determine whether Republicans maintain their House and Senate majorities in the upcoming midterm elections.

In Texas, all eyes are on the fiercely competitive Senate primaries. The Democratic contest features progressive firebrand Rep. Jasmine Crockett facing rising star state lawmaker James Talarico. Meanwhile, the Republican primary has evolved into a bitter three-way battle among longtime incumbent Sen. John Cornyn, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, and Rep. Wesley Hunt.

The Cornyn campaign and allied super PACs have spent nearly $100 million attacking Paxton and Hunt. Cornyn warns that Democrats could flip the seat if Paxton emerges as the nominee, citing the attorney general’s numerous scandals and legal troubles.

“If I’m the nominee, I’ll help President Trump by making sure that we carry the five new congressional seats as well as maintain this Senate seat,” Cornyn told Fox News Digital. He argued that nominating “a flawed candidate with incredible baggage like the attorney general” would jeopardize Trump’s agenda.

Paxton, a MAGA firebrand known for filing lawsuits against the Obama and Biden administrations, dismissed these concerns. “I’m 3-0. I’ve won three statewide races,” he said, pointing to polls suggesting he leads Cornyn. “This idea that I can’t win a race is not true.”

Hunt, a West Point graduate and military veteran who represents a Houston suburb, entered the race last fall, creating a three-way contest. Recent polls show Paxton leading Cornyn, with Hunt in third place. If no candidate exceeds 50% of the vote, the top two finishers will advance to a late May runoff.

Despite being courted by all three candidates, former President Donald Trump has remained neutral in the Republican primary, though his influence over the party remains substantial.

In the Democratic Senate primary, race has become a contentious issue between Crockett, 44, a civil rights attorney first elected to Congress in 2022, and Talarico, 36, a former middle school teacher considered a rising Democratic star.

Crockett, who is Black, accused a Talarico-aligned super PAC of darkening her skin tone in an ad, calling it “straight up racist.” She also suggested that criticisms questioning her statewide electability were “dog whistles” aimed at “tearing down a Black woman.”

The contest grew more heated when an influencer accused Talarico, who is white, of calling former Rep. Colin Allred a “mediocre Black man” in a private conversation. Talarico denied the characterization, saying he was referring to Allred’s campaign style as mediocre, not the congressman himself. Allred later endorsed Crockett.

Though dramatically outspent by Talarico, Crockett enjoys greater name recognition thanks to her high-profile position on the House Oversight Committee and viral clashes with Republicans. She has made her opposition to Trump central to her campaign and argues Democrats should focus on turning out low-propensity voters rather than converting Republicans.

Talarico has gained national attention through viral social media appearances, TikTok videos with millions of views, and his July appearance on Joe Rogan’s podcast, where Rogan suggested he should run for president. His campaign received another boost when his interview with Stephen Colbert was moved from broadcast TV to YouTube, with CBS citing FCC guidelines. The controversy helped Talarico raise $2.5 million in 24 hours.

In the campaign’s final days, Crockett received support from former Vice President Kamala Harris, who recorded a robocall urging voters to support her. Rapper Cardi B also endorsed Crockett on Instagram.

Democrats have long struggled to win statewide in Texas but believe they have an opportunity this year due to Republicans’ challenging political environment.

Several House primaries in Texas are also drawing attention. Republican Rep. Tony Gonzales faces a difficult primary challenge following allegations of an affair with a former staffer who died by suicide. Conservative Rep. Dan Crenshaw, the only Republican House member running Tuesday without Trump’s backing, is being challenged by state Rep. Steve Toth, who has Sen. Ted Cruz’s endorsement.

In North Carolina, former Republican National Committee chair Michael Whatley is the frontrunner for the GOP Senate nomination to succeed retiring Sen. Thom Tillis, while former Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper is expected to easily secure his party’s nomination.

In Arkansas, Republican Sen. Tom Cotton faces two primary opponents as he seeks a third term, while GOP Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders is running unopposed in her primary.
