One of Representative Eric Swalwell’s closest congressional allies has publicly distanced himself from the California Democrat, following bombshell sexual assault allegations that ultimately led to Swalwell’s resignation from Congress on Monday night.

“I want to be clear: I had no knowledge of the allegations of assault, harassment, and predatory behavior against Eric Swalwell,” Senator Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) stated. “The women who have come forward have shown courage. They deserve to be believed, to be supported, and to see justice served.”

Gallego’s statement represents a dramatic shift in what was once described as one of the strongest friendships in Congress. Swalwell had previously called Gallego his “best friend in the world,” and the two were known for their close personal relationship that extended beyond the Capitol.

The Arizona senator’s comments came just minutes before Swalwell announced his resignation, capping a swift political downfall that began with a bombshell report from the San Francisco Chronicle detailing allegations of sexual assault against the congressman from four women, including a former staffer.

“I trusted someone who I believed was a friend, but it is now clear that he is not the person I thought I knew,” Gallego added in his statement, marking a complete reversal from his previous support.

This abrupt change in position is particularly notable given Gallego’s recent defense of Swalwell. Just days before the allegations surfaced, Gallego had publicly supported Swalwell’s gubernatorial campaign on social media, writing: “When you are in first place, is when they target you. Eric is a fighter and he will win the Governors race.”

The two lawmakers had been friends since Gallego’s time in the House of Representatives. Their relationship came under scrutiny in 2021 when photos emerged showing the pair riding shirtless on camels during a privately funded trip to Qatar organized by the U.S.-Qatar Business Council. The images sparked criticism at the time but did not significantly damage their political standing.

For Gallego, who has signaled interest in a potential 2028 presidential bid, the swift distancing from Swalwell appears calculated. Political analysts suggest the senator is working to avoid any association with the scandal that could damage his own political ambitions.

“I am aware of efforts to bring an immediate expulsion vote against me and other members. Therefore, I plan to resign my seat in Congress.”
