Federal authorities charged a California man Monday after he allegedly attempted to breach security at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner where President Donald Trump was in attendance, an incident that resulted in gunfire and briefly interrupted the high-profile event.

Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, appeared in federal court in Washington to face multiple charges, including assault on a federal officer and using a firearm during a crime of violence. The chaotic incident on Saturday night led to shots being fired and prompted Secret Service agents to rush the former president off stage while attendees ducked for cover under tables.

According to officials, a law enforcement officer wearing a bullet-resistant vest was shot during the confrontation but is expected to recover from injuries. The incident represents one of the most significant security breaches at an event attended by Trump since he left office.

Prosecutors have not publicly detailed a motive for the alleged attack. However, investigators are examining a message authorities say Allen sent to family members minutes before the incident, in which he referred to himself as a “Friendly Federal Assassin” and made numerous references to Trump without directly naming him. The message reportedly contained grievances about various Trump administration policies.

Law enforcement officials are treating these writings, along with Allen’s social media history and interviews with family members, as key evidence regarding his potential motives and state of mind leading up to the incident.

Investigators believe Allen traveled extensively to reach the event, taking a train from California to Chicago before continuing to Washington. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche noted that Allen checked himself in as a guest at the hotel hosting the gala dinner, which typically maintains heightened security protocols for the annual media event that draws politicians, journalists, and celebrities.

Video footage released by Trump’s team shows a man, whom authorities identified as Allen, running past a security barricade while Secret Service agents sprint toward him. The suspect was reportedly armed with multiple weapons, including guns and knives, when apprehended.

Public records and social media profiles indicate Allen worked part-time for the past six years at a company providing college admissions counseling and test preparation services. He appears to be highly educated and had developed amateur video games, according to online profiles that match his name and appearance.

The White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, often called Washington’s “nerd prom,” traditionally brings together journalists, government officials, and celebrities for an evening that mixes humor with recognition of journalistic achievement. This year’s event, hosted by comedian Colin Jost, was briefly thrown into chaos when security alerts forced Trump and others to take protective measures.

Security experts have raised questions about how an armed individual could get so close to an event attended by a former president with Secret Service protection. The incident comes amid heightened concerns about political violence following the 2022 attack on former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband and a previous assassination attempt against Trump at a Pennsylvania rally in July.

The Secret Service and other federal agencies are conducting a comprehensive review of security protocols at the event. Officials have not disclosed how Allen allegedly bypassed initial security screenings at the Washington Hilton hotel where the dinner was held.

As of Monday evening, it remained unclear if Allen had secured legal representation. Multiple attempts by reporters to reach Allen’s family members at phone numbers listed in public records were unsuccessful, and there was no response when reporters visited his residence in Southern California.

Federal authorities are expected to provide additional details about the investigation and charges as court proceedings continue in the coming days.
