U.S. Attorney Upgrades Charges to First-Degree Murder in National Guard Shooting

U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro announced Friday that charges have been upgraded to first-degree murder against the suspect accused of shooting two National Guard members in what officials describe as an “ambush-style” attack.

The upgraded charges follow the death of one of the soldiers, 20-year-old Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, which was announced Thursday evening by President Donald Trump. Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe, 24, remains hospitalized in critical condition following Wednesday’s shooting.

According to Pirro’s office, the suspect, identified only as Lakanwal, now faces one count of first-degree murder, three counts of possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, and two counts of assault with intent to kill while armed. These charges represent a significant escalation from the initial charges of assault with intent to kill while armed and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence.

During the announcement, Pirro revealed that the suspect allegedly drove across the country before carrying out the attack with a .357 Smith & Wesson revolver. The prosecutor noted that “it’s too soon to say” what motivated the suspect to target the National Guard members.

The shooting comes amid heightened tensions surrounding military personnel deployments in various U.S. cities. National Guard units have been increasingly visible in recent years, responding to natural disasters, civil unrest, and pandemic-related emergencies. This attack raises concerns about the safety of military personnel serving in domestic operations.

Law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation indicated that authorities are examining Lakanwal’s travel patterns, communications, and online activities in the days and weeks leading up to the attack. Investigators are working to determine whether the suspect specifically targeted the National Guard or if the victims were chosen randomly.

The National Guard Bureau in Washington issued a statement expressing condolences to Beckstrom’s family and reaffirming their commitment to supporting Wolfe’s recovery. “Specialist Beckstrom represented the very best of America’s citizen-soldiers,” the statement read. “Her service and sacrifice will not be forgotten.”

Beckstrom, originally from Minnesota, had been serving in the National Guard for two years and was pursuing a degree in nursing at a local university. Wolfe, a six-year veteran of the Guard from Pennsylvania, had previously completed one overseas deployment.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin condemned the attack in a press briefing Thursday, calling it “a heinous act against those who have sworn to protect our communities.” He announced a review of security protocols for National Guard personnel operating in civilian environments.

The incident has prompted calls from some lawmakers for enhanced protection measures for military personnel serving in non-combat domestic roles. Representative Michael Turner, who serves on the House Armed Services Committee, urged a comprehensive security review. “Our service members should never face danger while serving on American soil,” Turner said in a statement released Friday.

The criminal case against Lakanwal is expected to move forward in the coming weeks, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for early next month. Prosecutors indicated they are continuing to gather evidence and may present additional charges to a grand jury.

If convicted of first-degree murder, Lakanwal could face life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Federal prosecutors have not yet indicated whether they will seek the death penalty in this case.

The FBI continues to assist local authorities with the investigation, focusing on the suspect’s background and potential connections to extremist ideologies or groups. Officials have urged the public to come forward with any information that might be relevant to understanding the suspect’s actions or motivations.
