Border Patrol Documents Reveal Migrant Accused in Loyola Student’s Murder Was Flagged as Flight Risk
Internal Border Patrol documents released Tuesday by the House Judiciary Committee reveal that Jose Medina-Medina, the Venezuelan migrant charged with killing 18-year-old Loyola University student Sheridan Gorman, was flagged as a flight risk with no valid asylum claim before his release into the United States in 2023.

The records detail Medina-Medina’s border apprehension: “A Border Patrol Agent encountered subject in the El Paso Border Patrol Sector area of responsibility. A Border Patrol Agent determined this subject had unlawfully entered the United States from Mexico, at a time and place other than as designated by the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.”
Perhaps most notably, the documents reveal that during processing, “The subject was asked and responded that they do not fear harm or persecution should they be returned to their native country” – indicating he did not express the asylum concerns that might typically justify release pending immigration proceedings.
