Stefanik Accepts Prestigious World Jewish Congress Honor, Pledges Continued Fight Against Antisemitism

Rep. Elise Stefanik accepted the World Jewish Congress’ highest honor Monday night at Manhattan’s Museum of Modern Art, just days after announcing her bid for New York governor. Speaking before 400 guests, Stefanik received the Theodor Herzl Award from businessman and former U.S. Ambassador to Austria Ronald Lauder.

Established in 2012, the award recognizes individuals who embody Herzl’s vision for a secure and self-reliant Jewish people. In her acceptance speech, Stefanik expressed gratitude to Lauder for his “steadfast leadership and extraordinary commitment to the cause of Jewish unity and security.”

“It is deeply humbling to receive the Theodor Herzl Award from the World Jewish Congress—an organization that, for generations, has stood as the diplomatic voice and moral conscience of the Jewish people across the globe,” Stefanik said. “You have defended Jewish communities in every corner of the world, fought antisemitism in every form, and strengthened the unbreakable bonds between Israel and the global community of free nations.”

Stefanik reflected on her high-profile efforts against antisemitism, particularly her viral 2023 congressional hearing that led to the resignations of several university presidents. During that hearing, Stefanik asked the presidents of Harvard, MIT, and the University of Pennsylvania a straightforward question: “Does calling for the genocide of Jews violate your university’s code of conduct?”

“I expected them to say ‘yes,'” she recalled. “But one after another after another said, ‘it depends on the context.’ And the world heard. Let me be clear. It does NOT depend on the context.”

That exchange, Stefanik noted, “set off a global reckoning and delivered accountability in higher education that we are still just beginning.” Her confrontation with university leaders over antisemitism on campus became a watershed moment in the national conversation about free speech limits and institutional responsibilities.

The congresswoman also addressed the challenges facing New York, which she characterized as “not just a city and state in crisis—it is the epicenter of the battle for the very Western values that have shaped America.”

She highlighted the state’s significance for Jewish Americans, noting that New York is “the beloved home to more Jews than anywhere outside of Israel,” while facing record-high antisemitic incidents last year—the highest count in the nation.

“Eighty years after Kristallnacht, we must not stay silent. I will continue to call out antisemitism, bigotry, Jew-hatred, anti-Americanism,” she pledged, connecting historical atrocities to contemporary challenges.

The award follows billionaire philanthropist Miriam Adelson’s public support for Stefanik’s gubernatorial bid during the Zionist Organization of America’s Justice Louis D. Brandeis Award Dinner just a day earlier. At that event, Stefanik received the organization’s Mortimer Zuckerman Maccabee Warrior Award for her efforts against antisemitism.

Adelson, widow of casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, described Stefanik as “a great leader” who has defended “the Jewish people, Israel and the Free World.” The endorsement from Adelson, a major Republican donor, represents significant support as Stefanik prepares to challenge Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul in 2026.

Stefanik’s political journey has been notable for her evolution from Trump critic to staunch ally. Once critical of Donald Trump during his first presidential run, she has since become one of his most loyal defenders in Congress, securing her position in House Republican leadership.

Her gubernatorial campaign, launched last Friday, enters a political landscape where Republicans have struggled in statewide races in deep-blue New York. However, recent Republican gains in New York City and congressional races have given the party hope for competitive statewide contests.

As Stefanik pivots toward her gubernatorial campaign, she appears poised to make her advocacy against antisemitism and support for Israel central themes of her platform, building on the recognition she has received from prominent Jewish organizations.
