Progressive Representatives Offer Alternative Thanksgiving Reflections on Immigration and Indigenous History

As millions of Americans gathered around their dinner tables for Thanksgiving celebrations on Thursday, several members of Congress from the progressive “Squad” used the holiday to highlight social justice issues affecting marginalized communities.

Representative Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts directed attention to families separated by immigration enforcement policies. “This Thanksgiving, I’m thinking of our neighbors with an empty seat at the dinner table. Those with loved ones abducted & deported from their families. Those we lost due to gun violence, mass incarceration, & more,” Pressley wrote in a social media post. “A more just America is possible, if we fight for it.”

Her comments come amid ongoing efforts by the Trump administration to crack down on illegal immigration, which has led to increased deportations and family separations at the southern border. Immigration advocates have criticized these policies as unnecessarily harsh and traumatic for affected families.

Fellow “Squad” member Representative Summer Lee of Pennsylvania took a different approach, focusing on the historical context of Thanksgiving for Native American communities. “Thanksgiving is a time of gratitude and community for many, but it’s also a reminder of stolen land and broken treaties for others,” Lee stated. “As we give thanks today, let’s also honor Indigenous communities by committing to the fight for sovereignty, justice, and freedom.”

This isn’t the first time Pressley has addressed indigenous issues. In October, she marked Indigenous Peoples’ Day with the declaration, “We are all on stolen land,” adding that “while Republicans try to whitewash American history, we acknowledge our country’s role in inflicting trauma on our Indigenous neighbors.”

The “Squad,” a group of progressive Democratic House members that includes Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, and Rashida Tlaib among others, has consistently used their platform to advocate for immigration reform, racial justice, and indigenous rights. Their approach often contrasts with more centrist positions within the Democratic Party.

These Thanksgiving messages highlight the growing tension in American society over how to interpret and commemorate national holidays. While many Americans view Thanksgiving as a unifying celebration of gratitude and family togetherness, others, particularly those from marginalized communities, see it as an opportunity to acknowledge historical injustices and ongoing struggles.

The representatives’ comments also reflect broader debates about immigration policy that have intensified during the Trump administration. Critics argue that stricter enforcement measures have torn families apart, while supporters contend they are necessary for border security and rule of law.

Indigenous rights advocates have long pushed for greater recognition of the historical trauma associated with European colonization of North America, including the displacement of Native peoples from their ancestral lands.

These divergent perspectives on Thanksgiving come at a time of heightened political polarization in the United States, with fundamental disagreements about how to address historical wrongs while moving forward as a nation.

As the country navigates these complex issues, the “Squad” members continue to use their congressional platform to amplify voices they believe are underrepresented in mainstream political discourse, even during traditional holiday observances.
