Newly Elected Somali Councilor in Lewiston Resigns Amid Felony Charges and Residency Controversy
A city councilor in Lewiston, Maine has resigned just days after taking office following a felony indictment and questions about his residency in the district he was elected to represent.
Iman Osman, who briefly served on the Lewiston City Council, submitted his resignation letter to Mayor Carl Sheline and Council President David Chittim, stating he had not made the decision lightly.
“For the betterment of our community and in the best interest of our city, I believe it is time for me to step aside,” Osman wrote. “I hope my resignation serves as a call to action for those who remain — an opportunity to reflect on the values of respect, inclusivity and kindness that should guide our public service.”
Osman’s departure follows a grand jury indictment on December 1 on charges related to the alleged theft of two firearms between November 2023 and October 2024. He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in Lewiston District Court on Tuesday.
The resignation also comes amid mounting scrutiny over Osman’s residency status. According to local reports, the address listed in his indictment has been condemned since October 2024, raising questions about his eligibility to serve in the ward he represented. On Monday, the Lewiston City Council voted 6-1 to investigate Osman’s residency, with Osman casting the lone dissenting vote.
In his resignation letter, Osman claimed he faced “racist opposition” during his campaign and was subjected to “vicious personal attacks” while in office. His attorney, Kiernan Majerus-Collins, told local media that national rhetoric about the Somali community contributed to the backlash against his client.
“The fact that the Trump administration is targeting Somali and Somali Americans across the country absolutely played a role in ginning up the kind of hatred and threats of violence that ultimately forced him to conclude that he could no longer serve in public office at this time,” Majerus-Collins said.
The controversy highlights ongoing tensions in Lewiston, Maine’s second-largest city, which has seen significant demographic changes in recent decades. Beginning in the early 2000s, the city became home to thousands of Somali refugees, transforming what was once a predominantly white, working-class former mill town.
The integration of the Somali community in Lewiston has not been without challenges. While many have celebrated the cultural diversity and economic revitalization immigrants have brought to the city, others have expressed concerns about the pace of demographic change and resource allocation.
Lewiston has worked to bridge cultural divides through various community initiatives, and several Somali Americans have been elected to public office in recent years. Osman’s election was initially viewed as another step toward greater representation in local government.
The city now faces the task of filling Osman’s vacant council seat. Local election officials will need to determine whether to hold a special election or appoint an interim representative until the next regular municipal election cycle.
Osman’s case raises broader questions about vetting processes for local candidates and the challenges facing immigrant communities seeking political representation in smaller American cities. It also underscores how national political rhetoric can impact local governance and community relations, particularly in diverse municipalities working to navigate changing demographics.
Neither the mayor’s office nor other council members have commented extensively on Osman’s resignation, though city officials have confirmed they will follow established procedures to address the vacancy.
