Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman was hospitalized Thursday morning after experiencing a medical incident during his early morning walk near his home in Braddock, according to a statement from his office.
The 54-year-old Democrat fell to the ground after feeling lightheaded, sustaining minor facial injuries in the process. Medical evaluations at a Pittsburgh hospital determined that Fetterman experienced a ventricular fibrillation flare-up, which triggered the episode.
“Out of an abundance of caution, he was transported to a hospital in Pittsburgh,” a spokesperson for the senator said. “Senator Fetterman is currently doing well and receiving routine observation at the hospital.”
Ventricular fibrillation is a serious cardiac rhythm disturbance where the heart beats with rapid, erratic electrical impulses, preventing effective blood pumping. The condition can be life-threatening if not promptly addressed, according to medical experts.
This isn’t the first health challenge for the first-term senator. Fetterman suffered a stroke in May 2022 during his Senate campaign against Republican candidate Dr. Mehmet Oz. The stroke occurred just days before the Democratic primary, which he went on to win despite being hospitalized.
The stroke and its aftermath became a significant issue during the general election campaign, with Fetterman acknowledging he had ignored warning signs about his health for years. He revealed he had been diagnosed with cardiomyopathy in 2017 but had not followed up with his doctor or taken prescribed medications.
Following his narrow victory over Oz in the November 2022 election, Fetterman has been open about his ongoing health challenges, including his struggles with auditory processing issues resulting from the stroke. In February 2023, he voluntarily checked himself into Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for treatment of clinical depression, staying for several weeks before returning to his Senate duties.
The 6-foot-8 former mayor of Braddock has emerged as an unconventional figure in the Senate, known for his casual attire of hoodies and shorts amid the traditional suits of Capitol Hill. Despite early concerns about his ability to fulfill his duties following his stroke, Fetterman has been an active participant in Senate proceedings.
Health experts note that patients with a history of heart conditions and stroke can be at higher risk for complications like ventricular fibrillation. Dr. Ami Bhatt, director of outpatient cardiology at Massachusetts General Hospital, who is not involved in Fetterman’s care, told CNN earlier this year that “cardiac disease and stroke often share risk factors, making comprehensive care essential for patients with such medical histories.”
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro expressed support for Fetterman following news of the incident. “Sending strength to our friend Senator Fetterman and wishing him a speedy recovery,” Shapiro posted on social media.
Senate colleagues from both parties have also expressed well-wishes. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said, “The entire Senate family is thinking of John and hoping for a quick recovery.”
Fetterman’s office has not provided details on how long he is expected to remain under observation or when he might return to his regular duties. His spokesperson indicated that additional information would be shared as it becomes available.
The senator’s health incident comes during a busy legislative period in Washington as Congress works to address government funding deadlines and other year-end priorities.
