Swalwell Resigns from Congress Following Sexual Misconduct Allegations

Former Representative Eric Swalwell, Democrat of California, announced his resignation from Congress on Monday amid mounting pressure from colleagues across party lines following serious sexual misconduct allegations that had already derailed his California gubernatorial campaign.

Swalwell’s decision came as multiple Democratic senators publicly called for his resignation. “I do,” Senator Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin said plainly when asked if Swalwell should step down. Senator Maria Cantwell of Washington similarly responded with a direct “Yes.”

In his resignation statement, Swalwell acknowledged personal failures while contesting the most serious claims against him. “I am deeply sorry to my family, staff, and constituents for mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past. I will fight the serious, false allegations made against me. However, I must take responsibility and ownership for the mistakes I did make,” he said.

The controversy erupted last Friday when CNN and the San Francisco Chronicle published explosive reports detailing allegations from multiple women. The accounts described disturbing patterns of behavior, including Swalwell allegedly pursuing intoxicated women, pressuring employees into intimate situations, and soliciting explicit images from female contacts.

Senator Mark Warner of Virginia expressed alarm at the nature and sources of these accusations. “They sound extraordinarily serious and I think — I don’t know Mr. Swalwell, but I do think when you have this many people who know him well, [making accusations] he should go,” Warner stated.

The situation escalated rapidly, with Swalwell facing not only the collapse of his gubernatorial ambitions but also the prospect of an expulsion resolution in Congress. If successful, such a vote would have forcibly removed him from his seat. Senator Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire suggested constituent pressure likely influenced Swalwell’s decision to resign before facing such a vote.

While agreeing to resign, Swalwell criticized the expedited expulsion efforts. “I am aware of efforts to bring an immediate expulsion vote against me and other members. Expelling anyone in Congress without due process, within days of an allegation being made, is wrong. But it’s also wrong for my constituents to have me distracted from my duties. Therefore, I plan to resign my seat in Congress,” he explained.

The allegations have prompted investigations beyond Congress. Reports indicate that Swalwell now faces a sex assault probe in Manhattan, further complicating his legal and political future.

The scandal has created ripple effects throughout Democratic circles, with several politicians rushing to return campaign contributions from Swalwell amid intensifying scrutiny. Even former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, once a close ally, has publicly distanced herself from the embattled congressman.

The impact extends beyond Swalwell’s personal career. His resignation creates a vacancy in California’s congressional delegation that Governor Gavin Newsom must address promptly. Under California state law, Newsom has 14 days to announce a special election to fill Swalwell’s seat, and once announced, that election must be held within 140 days.

Swalwell, who previously sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020 and served on the House Intelligence Committee, had been considered a rising star in the party before this dramatic fall from grace. His abrupt departure marks the end of his congressional tenure amid what has become one of the most significant political scandals of the year.

The case has reignited discussions about accountability, due process, and workplace conduct in political environments, with lawmakers from both parties acknowledging the seriousness of the allegations while differing on the appropriate procedural response.
