Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s offices were targeted with multiple bomb threats on Monday, according to a statement from the Democratic leader. The threats, which were sent via email to three of his New York state offices, reportedly came from an address alleging the “2020 election was rigged.”

Local law enforcement received the threatening emails directed at Schumer’s offices in Rochester, Binghamton, and Long Island. The messages reportedly contained the subject line “MAGA,” a reference to former President Donald Trump’s campaign slogan “Make America Great Again.”

“Local and federal law enforcement responded immediately and are conducting full security sweeps,” Schumer said in his statement. “Everyone is safe, and I am grateful for their quick and professional response to ensure these offices remain safe and secure for all New Yorkers.”

A law enforcement source, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the ongoing investigation, confirmed that Suffolk County police had responded to Schumer’s Long Island office but could not provide additional details about the nature of the threat. The U.S. Capitol Police declined to comment on the situation, citing their policy against discussing security matters involving members of Congress.

Schumer, who has served as the Senate Democratic leader since 2017 and became Majority Leader in 2021, strongly condemned the threats. “These kinds of violent threats have absolutely no place in our political system,” he said.

The incident comes amid heightened political tensions in the United States as the country approaches another presidential election. Since his defeat in the 2020 election, former President Trump has repeatedly claimed without evidence that the election was “rigged” or “stolen” – rhetoric that appears to have been echoed in the threatening emails sent to Schumer’s offices.

Despite Trump’s persistent claims about the 2020 election, courts across the country dismissed or ruled against his campaign in dozens of lawsuits. Election officials in all 50 states certified their results, confirming President Joe Biden’s victory.

Political violence and threats against elected officials have been on the rise in recent years. According to data from the U.S. Capitol Police, threats against members of Congress increased tenfold between 2016 and 2021, with the department investigating nearly 10,000 cases in 2021 alone.

The FBI has repeatedly warned about the growing threat of domestic extremism, particularly related to political and election-related issues. In a testimony before Congress earlier this year, FBI Director Christopher Wray noted that threats against public officials at all levels of government represent one of the most significant domestic terrorism threats facing the country.

Security measures for members of Congress have been enhanced in the wake of the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot and several high-profile attacks on political figures, including the attack on former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband, Paul Pelosi, in their San Francisco home in 2022.

As one of the highest-ranking Democrats in the country, Schumer has been a frequent target of political criticism from opponents, but direct threats like those reported Monday cross the line into potential criminal activity. Federal law enforcement agencies treat threats against elected officials as serious matters requiring thorough investigation.

Authorities have not yet announced whether they have identified any suspects in connection with the threats against Schumer’s offices. The investigation remains ongoing, with federal and local law enforcement agencies coordinating their response.
