Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has been hospitalized and is currently in critical but stable condition, according to a statement released Sunday evening on social media platform X.

The announcement came from Ted Goodman, a political strategist who collaborates with Giuliani on a livestream program. “Mayor Rudy Giuliani is currently in the hospital, where he remains in critical but stable condition,” Goodman wrote in his statement.

“Mayor Giuliani is a fighter who has faced every challenge in his life with unwavering strength, and he’s fighting with that same level of strength as we speak,” Goodman continued, adding a request for prayers for the 80-year-old former mayor.

No specific details regarding the cause of Giuliani’s hospitalization or the nature of his medical condition have been disclosed at this time.

This hospitalization comes just weeks after Giuliani was involved in a car accident in New Hampshire. According to reports from that incident, Giuliani had stopped to assist a victim of domestic violence when the crash occurred, resulting in injuries to the former mayor.

Giuliani, who served as New York City’s 107th mayor from 1994 to 2001, gained national prominence for his leadership following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, earning him the nickname “America’s Mayor.” His tenure as mayor was marked by significant reductions in crime and improvements in the city’s quality of life through his implementation of the “broken windows” policing strategy.

In recent years, Giuliani has remained in the public eye primarily through his association with former President Donald Trump. He served as Trump’s personal attorney and was a central figure in efforts to challenge the results of the 2020 presidential election, actions which have since led to various legal challenges for Giuliani.

These legal difficulties have included the suspension of his law license in New York and Washington D.C., as well as defamation lawsuits related to claims he made about voting machine companies during the election aftermath. In December 2023, a jury ordered Giuliani to pay $148 million to two Georgia election workers whom he had falsely accused of fraud.

Additionally, Giuliani faces criminal charges in Georgia related to efforts to overturn the 2020 election results in that state. He has pleaded not guilty to those charges.

Before his mayorship, Giuliani served as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York in the 1980s, where he gained recognition for prosecuting cases against organized crime figures and Wall Street criminals.

The news of Giuliani’s hospitalization has prompted reactions from across the political spectrum, with many political figures, regardless of party affiliation, expressing concern for his health.

At this time, no official statements have been released by Giuliani’s family members or his medical team regarding his prognosis or expected recovery timeline. Goodman’s statement remains the primary source of information about the former mayor’s current condition.

As new information becomes available about Giuliani’s condition, updates are expected from his representatives or family members. For now, the 80-year-old former prosecutor, mayor, and presidential candidate remains under medical care as he faces this latest health challenge.
