Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has been moved out of intensive care but will remain hospitalized before being discharged, according to his spokesperson Ted Goodman.

“The mayor and his family appreciate the outpouring of love and prayers sent his way,” Goodman said in a statement released Wednesday. “Mayor Giuliani—the man who took down the Mafia, saved New York City, and ran toward the towers on September 11th—is the same fighter he’s always been, and he’s winning this fight.”

Giuliani, 81, was hospitalized Sunday in critical but stable condition due to severe breathing problems. His condition deteriorated to the point where he was placed on a ventilator and a priest was called to his bedside to perform last rites.

By Tuesday, doctors had removed Giuliani from the ventilator. He is now breathing independently and able to speak, marking a significant improvement in his condition.

Dr. Maria Ryan, Giuliani’s physician, told Fox News that the former mayor began feeling ill after returning from a trip to Paris. His breathing worsened rapidly, necessitating emergency hospitalization.

“He’s a fighter — the way he was yesterday in such a critical condition, he did have a priest come anoint him,” Ryan said. “And all the prayers from around — it’s like a miracle. This guy’s got 9 lives, today he’s doing much better.”

Ryan expressed optimism about Giuliani’s recovery, saying she expects him to make a full return to health. Goodman echoed this sentiment, noting that “the power of prayer is working” and encouraging supporters to continue praying for the former mayor.

Giuliani has faced multiple health challenges in recent years. His spokesperson previously mentioned that Giuliani suffers from restrictive airway disease, a condition linked to his exposure to debris at Ground Zero following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. As mayor at the time, Giuliani was present at the World Trade Center site in the aftermath of the attacks and was exposed to potentially harmful dust and materials.

Last August, Giuliani was seriously injured in a car crash in New Hampshire, suffering a fractured thoracic vertebra and multiple lacerations. Despite these health setbacks, he has remained active in public and political life.

Former President Donald Trump expressed support for Giuliani following news of his hospitalization, calling him “the Best Mayor in the History of New York City, BY FAR” and describing him as a “True Warrior.”

Giuliani served as New York City’s mayor from 1994 to 2001, gaining national prominence for his leadership during the 9/11 attacks. Before his mayorship, he built his reputation as a federal prosecutor who led high-profile cases against organized crime families in New York. In recent years, he has remained in the public eye primarily through his association with Trump, serving as his personal attorney during Trump’s presidency and in the aftermath of the 2020 election.

The timing of Giuliani’s health crisis comes during a period when he has faced significant legal and financial challenges, including defamation lawsuits related to claims he made following the 2020 presidential election.

Goodman indicated that further updates on Giuliani’s condition would be provided as his recovery progresses, but no specific timeline for his hospital discharge has been announced.
