Republican Matt Van Epps secured victory over Democrat Aftyn Behn in Tuesday’s special election for Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District, with both parties finding reason to celebrate despite the nine-point margin that was narrower than expected in the traditionally Republican stronghold.

The GOP retained the seat vacated by retired Republican Congressman Mark Greene, with Republicans framing the win as a rejection of progressive policies. President Trump celebrated what he called a “BIG” win for the party, noting that Van Epps prevailed despite Democrats pouring “millions of dollars” into Behn’s campaign.

“Tennesseans voted in this resounding win to reject socialism, to reject the far-left radical ideology, and to support common-sense conservatism,” Van Epps told Fox News after his victory. “We are so happy with our margin of victory, and I think it’s setting the tone for 2026, and we are going to win decisively there and hold the House.”

Democrats, meanwhile, found encouragement in the closer-than-expected race in a district that Trump carried by more than 20 points in the last presidential election. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer characterized the result as “the latest flashing red light, indicating that Americans are fed up with Republican policies, particularly how much they have to pay for the things they really need.”

Progressive organizations described Behn’s campaign as “amazing” and “well run,” suggesting it gave “Democrats in the South and across the country a reason to believe,” despite the ultimate loss.

Behn’s candidacy was controversial, with critics highlighting her history of progressive activism. Videos surfaced during the campaign showing her being removed from Republican Governor Bill Lee’s office during a protest, and she faced scrutiny for past statements about “imagining a world without police” and her criticism of Nashville’s culture.

Some Republican commentators expressed concern about the narrowing margins in what should have been a safe seat. The Daily Wire’s Matt Walsh noted, “It wasn’t exactly a nail-biter, but 9 points is not a landslide. It should have gone Republican by like 40 points yesterday.”

Conservative CNN political commentator Scott Jennings offered a different perspective, describing Behn as “the median Democrat, a lunatic radical progressive,” suggesting her candidacy represented a broader shift within the Democratic Party toward more progressive positions.

Republican National Committee co-chair K.C. Crosbie countered Democratic claims of momentum, arguing that Behn “way underperformed” relative to other Democratic candidates in 2025 special elections. “They are just bowing to the far-left, woke-side of their party and people just aren’t buying into their message,” Crosbie said. “So, we feel really good going into the midterms.”

Tennessee Republican Congressman Tim Burchett attributed the victory to having “a great candidate in Matt Van Epps,” while also acknowledging what he called “the Donald Trump effect” in mobilizing Republican voters.

The results offer both parties narratives to carry into the upcoming election cycle. Republicans can point to their ability to hold a traditionally conservative seat despite significant Democratic investment, while Democrats see encouraging signs in their ability to make traditionally safe Republican districts more competitive.

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson indicated he hopes to swear in Van Epps as early as this week, officially adding him to Tennessee’s congressional delegation and slightly expanding the Republican majority in the House of Representatives.
