Sexual Misconduct Allegations Rock House as Rep. Edwards Faces Ethics Probe
A North Carolina Republican congressman is pushing back against sexual misconduct allegations, calling them politically motivated as the House Ethics Committee launches an investigation into claims involving younger female staffers.
“They are baseless allegations designed to impact the campaign driven by those who want to settle old political scores,” Rep. Chuck Edwards said in a statement to Fox News Digital. “We welcome the ethics inquiry because it allows for facts to be entered into the record, not public allegations designed to drive media interests.”
Edwards, 65, a two-term lawmaker who has been married since 1980, faces accusations of sexual misconduct toward at least two younger female staffers, according to multiple reports, with Axios first reporting the existence of the ethics probe. The exact nature of the allegations has not been publicly detailed, and Fox News has not independently verified the claims.
The investigation comes at a politically sensitive time for Edwards, who faces a competitive re-election challenge in November’s midterm elections. His North Carolina district is a top target for House Democrats, who are backing challenger Jamie Ager, a fourth-generation farmer.
Ager seized on the allegations in a statement this week, saying, “Corruption or abuses of power in any way are unacceptable. The people of Western North Carolina deserve to hear from their representative about what these allegations are.”
House rules explicitly prohibit lawmakers from engaging in sexual relationships with aides under their supervision, though the ban does not extend to staffers employed by other congressional offices.
The House Ethics Committee has yet to publicly announce its investigation into Edwards. Such probes often take months or even years to complete unless the panel decides to dismiss the case early. A spokesperson for the committee declined to comment when contacted.
Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.), who has emerged as a vocal advocate against sexual misconduct in Congress, called for swift action on the allegations.
“We stand with those who came forward, and we expect the Ethics Committee to move swiftly and hold those who committed wrongdoing fully accountable,” Mace said. “We have said it from the beginning, if you are abusing your power in Congress it does not matter if you have an R or a D beside your name, there needs to be consequences for your actions.”
Edwards joins a growing list of lawmakers facing sexual misconduct allegations this year, highlighting what some critics describe as a troubling pattern within the institution. In April, two representatives—Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) and Tony Gonzales (R-Texas)—resigned in quick succession amid separate sexual misconduct allegations to avoid potential expulsion votes.
Gonzales acknowledged having an extramarital affair with a former aide who later died by suicide. Swalwell, who is also married, admitted to exercising poor judgment but vigorously denied accusations of sexual assault and rape that had been leveled against him.
Meanwhile, Rep. Cory Mills (R-Fla.) remains under investigation by the House Ethics Committee for alleged sexual misconduct and other ethics violations. Mace has introduced a resolution to expel Mills but has not yet forced a vote on the measure. Mills has denied any wrongdoing and faces no criminal charges.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and other Republican lawmakers have indicated they want to allow the ethics panel to complete its investigation before considering any sanctions against Mills or other members facing similar allegations.
“The corruption and misconduct in Congress goes far deeper than anyone outside Washington knows,” Mace said Tuesday, suggesting the current cases may represent only part of a broader problem within the legislative branch.
As the Edwards investigation proceeds, it adds another flashpoint to what is already shaping up to be a contentious election season, with control of the House potentially hanging in the balance.
