Texas Representative Tony Gonzales announced Thursday evening that he will not seek re-election to Congress amid an ongoing House Ethics Committee investigation into an affair he had with a former staff member. The announcement comes just one day after Gonzales publicly admitted to the relationship for the first time.

“After deep reflection and with the support of my loving family, I have decided not to seek re-election while serving out the rest of this Congress with the same commitment I’ve always had to my district,” Gonzales said in a statement. The Republican lawmaker, a married father of six, had just advanced to the GOP primary runoff in his congressional district on Tuesday.

The House Ethics Committee launched its investigation on Wednesday to determine whether Gonzales engaged in sexual misconduct with a female staff member and if he provided special favors or privileges as a result of the relationship. The timing of the investigation, immediately following his primary election advancement, has raised questions about the political implications of the scandal.

Gonzales, who represents Texas’s 23rd congressional district – a vast border region stretching from San Antonio to El Paso – referenced his two decades of military service and three terms in Congress in his farewell statement. “At 18, I swore an oath to defend our nation against all enemies, foreign and domestic. During my 20 years in the military and three terms in Congress, I have fought for that cause with absolute dedication to the country that I love,” he said.

The congressman’s admission came during an appearance on a conservative talk radio show, where he acknowledged the extramarital relationship. His district has been at the center of numerous political battles, particularly regarding immigration policy and border security, issues Gonzales himself highlighted in his departure statement.

“From overcoming the border crisis to taking a stand with my communities after the worst school shooting in Texas’ history, my philosophy has never changed: do as much as you can, and always fight for the greater good,” Gonzales noted, referencing his involvement in the response to the 2022 Uvalde school shooting that occurred in his district.

The scandal represents another challenge for House Republicans, who currently hold a narrow majority in the chamber. While Gonzales has pledged to complete his current term, his departure will create an open seat in a district that has historically been competitive between the two parties. The 23rd district has flipped between Democratic and Republican control multiple times in recent decades, though redistricting has made it somewhat more favorable to Republicans in recent cycles.

Speaker Mike Johnson reportedly asked Gonzales to drop his re-election bid amid the scandal, according to multiple congressional sources. The pressure from Republican leadership likely contributed to Gonzales’s decision to step aside, as the party seeks to minimize potentially damaging scandals ahead of the November general election.

Political analysts suggest the timing of Gonzales’s admission – after securing his place in the runoff but before potentially winning the nomination – may allow the Republican Party time to rally behind another candidate who is untainted by scandal. The primary runoff will now likely attract significant attention as potential replacements consider entering the race.

Throughout his congressional career, Gonzales had positioned himself as a moderate Republican willing to work across the aisle on certain issues, particularly those affecting border communities and military veterans. Before entering politics, he served in the Navy, including multiple deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Gonzales concluded his statement by expressing gratitude to his constituents. “Through the rest of my term, I will continue fighting for my constituents, for whom I am eternally grateful,” he said, indicating he plans to remain in office until January 2027 when his current term expires.
