Swalwell’s Chinese Spy Connection Returns to Spotlight Amid Sexual Misconduct Claims

Representative Eric Swalwell’s announcement of his resignation from Congress has reignited scrutiny of both recent sexual misconduct allegations and his past ties to a suspected Chinese operative, with growing calls for the FBI to release its files on the matter.

The California Democrat, who recently suspended his gubernatorial campaign, now faces mounting pressure as critics demand transparency regarding his previous connections to Christine Fang, a suspected Chinese intelligence operative who reportedly targeted rising political figures in California.

The sexual misconduct allegations, which include claims from a former staffer who accused Swalwell of assaulting her twice while she was allegedly too intoxicated to consent, have become intertwined with the decade-old Chinese spy scandal in public discourse. The House Ethics Committee announced Monday it had opened an investigation into these misconduct allegations.

Swalwell has categorically denied the sexual misconduct claims, calling them “absolutely false” in a video statement. However, the combination of scandals has triggered renewed interest in the congressman’s history.

The Washington Post reported in March that the FBI was considering releasing redacted investigative files related to Swalwell’s ties to Fang. This potential disclosure prompted Swalwell to send a cease-and-desist letter to FBI Director Kash Patel, arguing such a release would violate his First Amendment rights, federal statutes, and Department of Justice policies.

The FBI responded that file reviews are routine, with a spokesperson stating: “This FBI, being the most transparent in history, prepares documents for numerous different reasons, including for release to different agencies and departments to further review investigations that may have been opened under previous administrations.”

Axios initially reported in 2020 that Fang had targeted California politicians, including Swalwell, as part of her suspected intelligence activities. According to previous reports, Swalwell cut ties with Fang in 2015 after being alerted by the FBI about her activities. Fang subsequently fled the country and was never charged.

The Department of Justice brought no charges against Swalwell over the matter, and the House Ethics Committee found no evidence of wrongdoing after a two-year investigation that concluded in 2023.

Nevertheless, conservative figures and social media influencers have seized on the current moment to demand the release of what they call the “Fang Fang files.” Mike Davis, president of the Article III Project and Trump ally, wrote on social media platform X: “It’s time for Congress to vote to release Eric Swalwell’s FBI file, which we must presume exists after his affair with a Chinese spy. His counter-intelligence risks must be staggering.”

Erica Knight, a spokesperson for FBI Director Patel, suggested Swalwell was being hypocritical, writing: “Democrats said releasing files = transparency and accountability. Now Democrats say releasing files = weaponization and smear campaigns. The only variable that changed is whose name is in the file.”

Following Swalwell’s resignation announcement, Patel, a longtime political adversary of the congressman, called for the public to submit tips to the bureau about Swalwell and invited him to meet for an interview.

The renewed interest in Swalwell’s past comes at a particularly vulnerable moment for the congressman, who suspended his California gubernatorial campaign on Sunday following a San Francisco Chronicle report detailing allegations from a former staffer.

Before these recent developments, Swalwell had defended his past association with Fang, stating in a 2020 CNN interview that he was “shocked” when authorities informed him about her and that he had offered his full cooperation to the FBI at that time.

As recently as last month, when reports emerged about the FBI potentially releasing investigative files, Swalwell accused the bureau of attempting to interfere with his gubernatorial campaign, stating: “The reason Trump is so desperately trying to stop me is not because I’m running for Governor of California but because now I’m the favorite.”

With his resignation from Congress scheduled for Monday, Swalwell’s political future remains uncertain as both investigations continue to unfold.
