Rep. Mike Thompson Named as Designated Survivor for Trump’s State of the Union Address

Democratic Representative Mike Thompson of California has been selected as one of the designated survivors for President Donald Trump’s upcoming State of the Union address on Tuesday evening.

Thompson confirmed his appointment in a post on social media platform X, stating, “I’ve been selected as a designated survivor for tomorrow’s State of the Union, so I won’t be there in person, but I’ll be watching.” In his message, Thompson also took aim at the administration, expressing concerns over “the militarization of ICE, terrorization of our communities and killing of American citizens.”

As part of the longstanding contingency protocol, designated survivors do not attend the president’s address to Congress and instead remain at a secure, undisclosed location. This practice, dating back to the Cold War era, ensures continuity of government in case of a catastrophic event that might eliminate multiple officials in the presidential line of succession.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) selected Thompson for this role ahead of what will be Trump’s fourth State of the Union address. While Thompson will be absent from the Capitol, he announced that his guest, Marine Corps veteran and Napa City Councilmember Bernie Narvaez, will attend the event.

“Bernie is a shining example of what it means to be a public servant and to fulfill the American Dream,” Thompson said when announcing Narvaez as his guest. “As a veteran, small business owner, immigrant, local elected official, husband and father, Bernie knows all too well the importance of standing up for our country, defending our democracy, and lowering costs for hardworking people.”

Thompson, who represents California’s wine country region, did not hold back in his criticism of the Trump administration in his official statement regarding his designated survivor status. “Since the day he took office, this president has raised costs for hardworking families, unleashed ICE to terrorize our communities, and threatened unlawful military attacks on foreign countries,” Thompson stated.

He added that “Americans demand answers when he addresses the nation. We will keep holding him to account in the Congress, in the Courts, and in the court of public opinion.”

Last March, when President Trump addressed a joint session of Congress, Veterans Affairs Secretary Doug Collins served as the designated survivor. The White House has not yet announced its cabinet-level designated survivor for Tuesday’s address.

The practice of selecting designated survivors has evolved over time. While most commonly associated with members of the president’s cabinet, the Constitution Center notes that in recent years, congressional members have also been asked to serve in this capacity during major governmental events.

The concept of the designated survivor, while not explicitly required by the Constitution, has become a standard security protocol for events where most of the government leadership gathers in one location. The Constitution does outline the presidential line of succession, but the designated survivor system adds an additional layer of security to ensure governmental continuity.

President Trump’s address comes at a time of significant national division. According to recent polling, the president faces mixed approval ratings as he prepares to outline his administration’s priorities and achievements before the joint session of Congress.

The State of the Union address represents one of the most important annual political traditions in the United States, bringing together members of the House, Senate, Supreme Court, Cabinet, and diplomatic corps. This concentration of governmental power in one room is precisely why the designated survivor protocol remains an important security measure in the modern era.
